When most products on the market are designed without taking disability into account, Beyond Sight wants to provide a completely safe and comfortable device for the blind. Based on that fact, three products were chosen to be redesigned so that they can be used intuitively without the need of vision. For blind people, home is much safer place for them than outside, they are familiar with their household items and house activities where they can easily memorize space and location. This project is about making sure that blind people can feel more comfortable at home.
Beyond Sight consists of three redesigned products, a speaker, a remote control, and a timer. Ahn Byeonguk, Kim Minseok, and Lee Jaehee wanted to make sure that these products are simplified with easy-to-use buttons for different functions.
The speaker is redesigned so that blind people can easily control the volume by moving the ball part up and down. There’s no complicated interface, all key operating buttons are easy to understand simply by touching them. Double touch the body of the speaker to power it on/off, touch it once to play/pause music. User can rotate the dial clockwise/counterclockwise to change the track.
Unlike most remote controls which are difficult to use by the blind people, this redesigned remote control focuses on channel buttons and volume, they are the key functions of this controller. Furthermore, to make it easier to control, it is equipped with a microphone that recognizes voices.
Finally, the timer is redesigned to make it possible to access configurable time presets in Braille.
