Alpha Concept Car : Single Seater Vehicle with Wooden Chassis

Alpha is a concept car that creates a link between a regular car and a lighter vehicle such as bicycle or a motorcycle. Due to its compact size (3000 mm length,1500 mm width, and 900 mm high ) this electrically powered single-seater vehicle would be ideal for a dynamic young population living in continuously growing cities of the future. The uniqueness of this car lies in its wooden chassis. Designed by Rustam Schogenoff, you can read his explanations about this futuristic car below.

The idea here is to replace all the complex and heavy engineering components of a vehicle by technical properties of the natural materials. One of these materials is wood. This simple material has a number of excellent building physics properties. The main ones are: strength, hardness, lightweight, elasticity, toughness, decay-resistance, and strength. It aims to smartly installed wooden limbs so that it could replace conventional chassis with complex elements such as suspensions, axles and dampers. The construction would even already incorporate all the functions of those elements. The number of technical devices used in a vehicle would be reduced, which would automatically reduce the total weight, energy consumption, the ejected gases, the energy in the production and of course the price).

The Tulip is not yet another electric vehicle. The way I see it’s a striving to change the idea of one’s personal mobility. I don’t think it’s enough to cope with the emissions from conventional vehicles. We have to address also the industry that is creating them and the consumer mind of modern people fueling this industry.

This is why I want to design not only a new type of vehicle, but a whole new model for the personal transportation. An object that evolves with you, something that you form an emotional connection with. Look at it as your home. You can’t buy home. You can buy a house and use it as a base to build upon. Model it and arrange it according to your taste and needs until gradually over time it becomes your home. I want to achieve this effect with a vehicle.

Mosquito Trap Product Range Helps Prevent Malaria, Dengue or Yellow Fever

Currently, half of the world’s population is permanently threatened by diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes. Well known examples are malaria, dengue or yellow fever, which occur mainly in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and their hinder economic and social development. While the diseases are not only the result of underdevelopment, they are also caused by it.

At the beginning, various laboratory tests with different prototypes were conducted to understand the influence of trap geometries and dimensions on the behavior of the mosquitoes. It proved to be difficult to reach the highest possible attractiveness for the insects while also complying with the user requirements. Ultimately, over 25 prototypes were tested to optimize both the efficacy of the trap in catching mosquitoes and the usability for the end user.

Three different trap variations were developed. All of them incorporate the core trapping technology but differ in their features and the targeted end user group. End user groups include:

  1. Researchers and professional mosquito control operators
  2. Private consumers searching for protection against mosquito borne diseases
  3. Commercial and private users who want to reduce the mosquito nuisance in gardens and other outdoor locations.

Ondo Music Editing Phone Concept : Play It, Mix It, Rock Out To It !

The Onyx; this was the model mobile phone which took the more traditional keypad to a whole new level by introducing the touch screen edge. With just a finger or a joystick you could click your way to revelation. But even with the pomp and color that Synaptics and Pilotfish, who are interface developers and industrial studio designers respectively, launched Onyx, it still wasn’t good enough to get sold.

But it may have become the harbinger of future mobile phone concept developments. With Pilotfish, a new development in the concept of phone music editing was born. The Ondo combines the touch screen ability with a back that lithely twists and turns to allow for fast and comprehensive editing of desired music on the phone.

This new concept according to Pilotfish is a bid to lessen the burden of mobile phone manipulation especially for those who find it hard to even understand the features and also make music enthusiasts happy. Of course we can not conclusively judge the efficiency of this designed concept but the need for a classy easy to use music editor has always been in the heart of mobile phone music lovers who want a calling phone with an Ipod like concept among its features.

Living Pots Sustainable Cultivation Units for Organic Farming

In order to reduce tree consumption, DesignNobis has come up with concept Living Pots sustainable cultivation units which consist of 100% recyclable and re-used materials. Each unit is made out of simple metal and scrap pieces of log, it can be folded flat for easy transport and assembly. The main goal of this project is to reduce wood consumption by designing and developing sustainable pot for plants, herbs, or mushrooms using scrap parts from industrial wood processing. The end product features minimalist and stylish design for green conscious growers.

Organic farming is practiced for both individual and industrial purposes, the design of this unit allows ecological way for growing and cultivating plants better than plastics in terms or breathing. For example mushroom cultivation, it requires specific moisture level which can be achieved from conventional sliced logs, but using this pot, it prevents any trees from being cut.

Gen-X Buskers Amp : Mobile Musical Equipment for Street Performers by Nathan McDonald

The problem all musicians have is the transportation of their musical equipment, and it is because of this that you will often see a guitarist (for example) struggling down the street with his/her guitar and case, an amplifier, and a backpack full of other stuff they need (like cables, foot pedals, a microphone and stand, and a drink).

Based on extensive research done by Nathan McDonald, a product designer, he found that buskers (street performers) have two options in the way they perform: they can either play acoustically and strain their voices to be heard, or they can play electrically but have to bring their own power source. The most common power source for this is a car battery, which is just something else to carry, and car batteries are not light! This is where the Gen-X Buskers Amp comes in.

The Gen-X Buskers Amp is an innovation in mobile musical equipment. The Gen-X incorporates a back-pack style design, this is to aid in the transportation of musical equipment, since it is easy to carry and other smaller pieces of equipment can be stored inside the Gen-X’s storage compartment. For increased sound quality the Gen-X has a hard polypropylene shell, but because of this the back panel has to be shaped to fit the spine for comfort. The Gen-X uses 3 oval speakers that have been arranged to create the ‘new face of outdoor performing’.

Although named a ‘buskers amp’ this could in fact be used by any musician on the move. Gen-X Buskers Amp can be used outside, powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery, or indoors powered by an AC adaptor.

Inumflis Car with Pulse by Calin Giubega

The automobile is a closed environment and throughout the history, constant efforts were made to increase comfort and speed. Outside our natural context, inside the automobile we have to rely mostly on our vision sense and with the increasing speeds, we reached and even exceeded its limits. Thus in some cases we are not able to correctly perceive and relate distance and speeds of other objects, having possible dramatic consequences.

Safety behind the steering wheel depends on our behavior, having many elements inside of a car which can be distracting, but it also depends on weather conditions, where fog, heavy rain or even a very bright day can significantly reduce visibility. As the automobile augments the human body when traveling, Inumflis augments the sense of touch, offering the user the new ability of perceiving intangible distant objects, their speed and position, through the sense of touch, complementing the sense of sight. Thereby, Inumflis wants to reduce cognitive load by distributing information to the two senses giving a more accurate perception of a moving object.

The goal is to create a discrete but effective communication, on a time scale large enough to prevent warnings and automatic behaviors of cars in the first place, encouraging drivers towards a safer driving behavior by creating awareness and not by imposing limitations.

Inumflis uses pulse as being a mental model we all have even before we were born, a notion that is continuously perceived throughout our lives. By using pulse, Inumflis wants to establish emotional bonds with the vehicle, creating awareness of the environment to the driver and also a more natural, precise and easy to perceive communication system.

Current detection technologies, some already in production and some in development, although different from a technological point of view, use more or less the same communication methods. Communication is made through the sense of vision, being either with an LED, display and more recently HUD`s. Although communication is achieved, efficiency is arguable. As an example, communication for mid-range detection of blind spot objects is made through an LED integrated in the mirror, relying on the driver to check the mirror. But what happens if he/she doesn`t? Furthermore, considering displays, a constant add of visual elements will only accelerate the reach of vision sense limits with an increase in cognitive load.

Inumflis is design to work with existing detection technologies, systems that are using Global Positioning System, Radar and Ultrasounds to detect vehicles all around. Thus, the pump and inner layer with patterned air cushions in the steering wheel will receive information from the sensors which will cause the small air cushions to inflate.

The patterned layer is divided in two main areas which in turn are divided in other two regions, representing left and right sides.

The main area that is corresponding with the fingers (highlighted in blue) is placed in the back of the steering wheel and communicates objects/vehicles in front of the installed car, while the main area (highlighted in red) that corresponds with the palm and thumbs is placed on the front region, communicating objects in the back of the vehicle. The other two regions of the main areas are representing the left and right sides.

Communication to the user is achieved by inflating the air cushions in a certain rhythm and intensity, corresponding with the speed and distance of an approaching vehicle. Thus as a distant object is detected, the pulse will start with a low rate and intensity, both increasing gradually as the object is approaching.
