Green Wheel Revolutionary Rotary Hydroponic System by Libero Rutilo

Green Wheel is actually a conceptual revolutionary rotary hydroponic system developed by NASA in order to provide continuous supply of fresh herbs and salad in spacecraft. It’s pretty effective that this industrial designer wanted to transfer the concept into our daily life and so far it looks pretty promising. This rotary garden could be the first one to become an iconic object in your home for both its unique design and benefits.

If you compare this to conventional garden, Green Wheel provides more advantages, for example, you can produce a variety of agricultural products from the convenience of your own living room. By growing your own herbs and vegetables, it can also mean eliminate the need for all that fuel consumption to take you to supermarket as well as plastic packaging consumption. Yep, it is an eco-friendly device.

Ronin 47 Motorcycle Project Was Based by Buell 1125 from Harley Davidson

When Harley Davidson announced the elimination of Buell brand, founders of Ronin Motor Works were disappointed. They have always respected Buell motorcycle philosophy that is challenging Status Quo, the Buell 1125 series with a liquid cooled engine looked like the start of interesting times in motorcycle world. Since the production of this cool vehicle was ceased, Magpul Industries Corp managed to get 2 Buell 1125Rs which are used as design exercise to explore what kind of bike can be built around this revolutionary engine and frame. The result is Ronin 47 Motorcycle.

This cool design is based on 1125 where the front end features a linkage fork designed for better handling characteristic of stock Buell chassis. Just in case you haven’t noticed, the axle moves along the same path as a conventional set of telescopic forks. The increased trail by 13mm over stock allows this bike steers lightly yet can be handled confidently. The benefit of this design over a telescopic fork is that you can have easily tunable suspension through the Penske mono-shock for finer adjustment of rider’s weight and any road environments.

Guest Post : Chairs in the Bauhaus

This article is a guest post from Tom Faulkner, a furniture designer who believes simplicity of line and proportion are the cornerstones of all good design and he applies this principle to everything he makes.

The Bauhaus Design School may be the most prestigious and influential design studio in the last century with regard to modern furniture. Founder and architect Walter Gropius believed that furniture served a social and societal function, and that minimalist, inexpensive design was the way to ensure everyone had access to comfortable, sophisticated furniture. This design ethic remains very much in force today, and Bauhaus-inspired designs grace every kind of building from public offices to private residences.

These 20th century modernists made metalwork their own, and reclaimed it as a material from the worlds of engineering and architecture. They adored its strength and versatility, and its aesthetic simplicity. Tubular steelwork is one of the signature trademarks of many of the sleek, modern designs is of Bauhaus furniture.

Here are five classic Bauhaus designs that you might see just about anywhere!

1. Brno chair by Mies van der Rohe

Brno chair by Mies van der Rohe

Designed by the popular German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, this classic, elegant chair is still being used by the stylish and fashion conscious all over the world. Mies van der Rohe was an alumnus of the Bauhaus and coupled his unique architectural vision with the Bauhaus vision of inexpensive, easy to assemble furniture. The Brno chair has a simple chrome plated frame made of flat steel plate, which is combined with a supportive and soft upholstered seat. It is one of the most successful chairs to come out of the Bauhaus school, it is still made today under license but is also extensively copied. Beware of cheap imitations! Some places you may see this (or very similar) designs include reception areas, waiting rooms, smart offices, and high end private residences -making this design one of the most ubiquitous in the furniture industry.

Lockheed Stratoliner Design Is Inspired By Bar-tailed Godwit

The Lockheed Stratoliner is designed to be the next step in passenger flight, flying higher and further than its predecessors. Lockheed Martin was chosen as the focus of the study not only because of its track history of producing some of the most revolutionary concepts in aviation, but also it inspires other designers in other industries, such as the F22 stealth language being adopted by Lamborghini.

Based on the form of the Bar Tailed Godwit, a bird that holds the record for the longest recorded none stop flight without feeding at 11,680km. The large bird shaped wings help to generate enormous amounts of lift allowing the aircraft to fly at much higher altitudes where the air is thinner. Thinner air reduces drag on the airframe allowing higher top speeds whilst reducing fuel consumption.

Levitating Superconducting Speakers by James Coleman

James Coleman, a Product Design student at the University of Brighton, UK, has conceived of a revolutionary way of producing sound, for use in freestanding loudspeakers (eg hi-fi, TV surround sound and desktop computer speakers) named Levitating Superconducting Speakers. We have featured his work previously when he tried to redesign Kodak Box Brownie.

The Levitating Superconducting Speakers concept works by having a superconducting element housed inside a transducer, which can be suspended in a superdiamagnetic field by an electromagnet. Changing the electromagnetic field strength will cause the transducer to oscillate, which will impart sound directly into the air.

Collapsible Bicycle by Kevin Scott

It’s not often that I could see such a revolutionary design yet it is not just a concept. This bike design from Kevin Scott is a bendable bicycle that you can literally wrap around a lamp post or a pole. It certainly will stop thieves from targeting your bike. The young Industrial Designer used a ratchet system built into the frame of the bike to make it possible to wrap the bike around a pole. The bike bends to lock onto itself, there’s no need for a chain, a regular bike lock will be able to secure the frame and both wheels. His main objective was not just to secure all bike’s components within the lock, but also to allow the bike to be stored in small spaces. A very cool bike design, indeed!
