Designed for mobile gamers, PocketPlay is a concept game controller for iPhone. It has folding and rotating features that makes it extremely compact when not in use. This way, game players can easily carry this controller inside the pocket or just toss it into their backpack. Thanks to MagSafe, it’s possible for a game player to charge both game controller and the phone simultaneously while playing.
Through exploration of different forms and folding methods, the designer found the design directions pretty quick through hand-drawn sketches on paper and digital 2D drawings.
Ethan Chiang, a Taiwan industrial designer, used clay and off-the-shelf game controllers to engage in the process crafting rough prototypes. Multiple models were made to serve as exploration of a wide array of gripping sensations and intuitive design. Through this iterative approach, it is possible for the designer to refine the ergonomics and aesthetic of PocketPlay. The goal is to create a game controller that meets mobile gamers’ demands and preferences.
