Technology is improving day by day and many of the innovations are being planned for various segments of people. Many of the innovations are also invented for people with various ailments. Like the new Voice Stick, a concept text scanning device for the visually impaired. As the name suggests, the stick when scanned in the printed letters, the OCR function recognizes the text and converts the information into voice. The voice is then read back and thus helping the visually challenged. It is a quite innovative and practical product. So whatever be the matter, like letters, E-mails etc, it works out to be a perfect solution and companion for the visually challenged.
Braille is on of the most important ways that visually impaired individuals acquire their information. The problem is that it is hard to find braille books due to the high costs involved to published them compared to common books.
Voice Stick is a portable text scanning device for the visually impaired. When it scans printed letters, the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) function recognizes the texts and converts the written information into a voice. The portable stick, Voice Stick, can be used to convert any words or letters found in our daily life, such as in books, newspapers, contracts, mail, etc., into voice information.

Great idea but how are they gonna know where to scan if they can't see?
The same way they know where to start feeling braille.
Well, I presume they feel around the edge of the book or somebody directs them.
I just wish it was possible to type as a blind person, must be a loain if you type a lot and GET blinded.
Ours company work with low Vision in Brazi .I am interested to speak with marketing department .My celular and wasup is 55 21 99136524
I tries to feel a page in a book and
I were able to feel were the ink
were in the book.
It took a minute or so to learn it.
Try if your can too.
"If you can find the blinder around you, please let them read the fllowing the braille."
What does that even mean?
you can type as a blind person. my private lesson teacher for flute is blind and she has this program which says the key of which she is typing. I'm sure it takes a little while to get used to but she can type something like 60-80 words per minute.
Where can I get a hold of one? How much do they cost?
Anybody know what the cost for one is because Im doing a project on it but I can find the price
I am totally blind and currently use mainstream scanning software with a pc and an a4 size scanner, but I would love a portable solution to be able to read print.
I tried to find the website http://www.voicestick.com but its not relevant to this product. can somebody please provide this product's website? I would like to find out about the cost so I can consider buying it for a classmate!!!! :):)
@Serena, you can't buy this product, it's only a concept for now
The best thing about this concept is that only 5% of the blind can actually read Braille. It is about time that technology that has existed for a long time is being used to help the visually impaired. The only thing about this product though is that if only 5% of the blind can read Braille, the buttons on the product would be hard to use as they would not know what buttons they are pressing.
I can't read braille but I can operate my bedside radio in the dark without looking. The point is, you only have to learn where the different buttons are, you don't NEED to read the labels on it.
I'd like to learn more about Voice Stick. Where available? Cost? Any other info?
This pen will also help those that have dyslecxia or learning disabilities that make reading difficult. There is a pen reader out now but it is difficult to use because it must be held in just the right way and is difficult to use.
This could be improved with a side that had a braille display, and a usb slot to load books upon the device and a card reader to load the device with prescanned books also replaceable batteries would be a wonderful improvement.
how much does it costs? i'd like to buy for my visually impared kids. please send info..thanks

I would like to know price I am blind and going to school for bling
It is really Sad if this is only a concept and Not an existing or an Upcomming Device as this gives hope to those who cant see light … and then when you say it is only a concept … you can buy this product it is like breaking their hopes
if a person cant buy this product … then atleast let them know when are you planning to make the device and launch it since you have given us hopes
Can regular updates (i.e. details, prospect of launching product and availability) about this product be made available? There appear to be similar available products but I like the concept, design and the convenience of this product. Can we hope to see this product in the near future?

I just wish it was possible to type as a blind person, must be a loain if you type a lot and GET blinded.
it is possible, why do you think it wouldn't be???
I am blind and I can probably type faster than someone with no foresight like you. you are the impaired one posting comments like that.
I love this comment i know many blind people who can type much much faster then i can on either QWERTY or braille keyboards. It amazes me how ignorant people are of the tech blind people can use.
I am amazed at how stupid some people are, why do people assume that we as visually impaired people can not feel the edge of a book and then proceed to scan down the page until we hear the words being scanned.
