SS17 Fashion Design Uses Optical Illusion to Create Motion Illusion for Viewers

SS17 is a selection of women’s clothing designed by Elaheh Safi for 04Studio. She used moire pattern as a subtle of optical illusions. She tried to show how optical illusions can make your eyes go wrong in recognizing distance and motion.

Elaheh believes that “Clothes can go beyond the second skin of human or a space around the body”. People have always been looking for a way to change their appearance, so clothing like architecture has considerable effect on people feelings and the way they choose to express themselves. The main target of this project is to convey motion illusion to viewers.

Optical illusion is a very enjoyable mistake without use of any complicated technology and it is made only by visual system. You may see a person standing but his/her clothes stars moving with your moves! All pieces are made of printed silk and transparent fabrics and they made by hand. Black is used for the color because of its highly contrast that can make the best moire effect. Minimal style and careful selection of material and precise pattern making, helped us to achieve a refined silhouette.

  1. The designer dress amazed me that it gives us the opportunity to convey motion illusion to viewers. I think it’s not just a fashion it’s a creativity of optical illusions. This is really a great combination with high-quality work by Elaheh Safi.
