San Shan Bridge Connects City Center with Zhangjiakou for Beijing Olympic Winter Games 2022

Spanning across Gui River, San Shan Bridge would become a new landmark in Beijing. It’s an integral part of infrastructure program dedicated for the Olympic Winter Games 2022, this bridge would connect the city center with Zhangjiakou. The words “San Shan” means 3 mountains, describing the form of the bridge that can be seen from the side thanks to its 3 arches connecting to the hilly backdrop.

This bridge will be built to become the main gateway between the dense of the city and the undulating river valleys in the North of Beijing. The area around this bridge has grown rapidly in popularity for both residents and tourists, it has become a recreational area. All major outdoor competitions will be held at Zhangjiakou, this bridge will become an inviting sculpture where people can enjoy, jaw dropping mountainous scenery along the way to that location. Next to San Shan Bridge, there’s an area designated to the Beijing Horticultural Expo 2019 and any major developments by international architects would transform this region into an exhibition hub.

San Shan Bridge would become main connection to all essential locations, it’ll become an essential public link for a wider Beijing Expansion Masterplan. The main inspiration of this bridge design was conjunction of its undulating surrounding as well as the meaning of Olympic symbol that consists of 5 interlaced rings of equal dimensions. The union of 5 continents of Beijing is represented within the rings.

Pedestrian lanes and transportation lanes are divided by a natural stripe of hedges and tress, it connects 2 green shores over the span of the bridge. This design makes the bridge becoming an inviting public space and separating visitors from the traffic.
