Project Cubiq – Future Mobility Lifestyle for The Year of 2035

Submitted by Charles Keusters, Project Cubiq is his vision of future mobility lifestyle where we might no longer need an office, we can work while traveling, meet new people, see new cultures, and many more. You can read his explanations about this project below.

I want to use driverless mobility as a catalyst for a new life style: Traveling the world and exploring all its facets, whilst being able to do work on the journey between one discovery and the next. Challenging the idea of our current lifestyle – of having to choose one place to live and work, enduring congested commuting, overcrowded offices, with just enough time for short, infrequent travels. My dream is to facilitate meeting new people, seeing new cultures, discovering and preserving nature, whilst still being able to be an entrepreneur, freelancer, artist, or whatever one chooses to be…

At its core Project Cubiq aims to tackle three contemporary issues:

  1. Eventually, automation can give us the means to end the need of human workers to perform monotonous, manual labour. This could provide the unique opportunity of instead creating a vast variety of creative, stimulating, and more fulfilling jobs across all fields.
  2. Modern offices largely follow an open design approach which is proven to be a nightmare for concentration. It comes at the cost of productivity and the comfort of the worker – a new office concept is needed. As Compernolle, management consultant and Professor at the Free University of Amsterdam, states: “A flexible office that puts reflection and focus first. Unlike open offices [that], for cost cutting reason put contact first. […] Close enough to promote contact and separated enough to offer privacy.”[1]

The year 2035: Humanity has embraced a zero emission society and new settlements have emerged all around the globe. These settlements, in harmony with flora and fauna, are housing a diverse population with their own unique way of life. They serve as a base to work, to explore and experience the wonders our incredible planet beholds. Fast and efficient transportation systems, running on renewable energy, allow us to travel comfortably from place to place. International hyperloops and supersonic jets, can transport people across long distances in a matter of hours. On a regional level, driverless vehicles such as the Cubiq allow people to move between settlements whilst providing a space for work, social interaction, and leisure. This gives birth to an entirely new way of life: Spend a week freelancing while doing charitable work for the preservation of the amazon rainforest – on site. For a change in environment just continue the journey and finalise your project with a view on the revitalised great barrier reef, before ending your weekend with a team-building workshop in Greenland.

With automation on the rise, we are currently facing the replacement of many jobs across all industries. But rather than treat it as a threat, we can choose to embrace this change as a chance towards creating the world described above. A world in which everyone can spend their life the way they choose – striving for knowledge and discovery, sharing and teaching, exploring and preserving our incredible versatile and beautiful planet.

You can rent an individual space on a shared driverless Cubiq vehicle for the duration of your journey, the interior of which can be adapted to suit your needs. Under the canopy of the regrown and carefully preserved rainforest you start to work on your next assignment: A gentle, bright light illuminates the workplace specifically created by Cubiq’s UI, whilst personalised music plays softly in the background. Further down your journey the Cubiq app matches you with potential business partners, allowing you to choose to engage in conversation and hold career furthering meetings along the way.

Alternatively, you might choose to spend some time collecting ideas and envisioning your next project – the office changes: The lights are now dimmed, the music stops and the Cubiq’s User Interface allows you to collect and organise ideas with the aid of a 3D augmented reality interface. Finally, Cubiq can provide the ideal environment for leisurely activities: Once more the lights change their intensity and focus on e.g. reading material. A relaxing fire, simulated on the vehicles interface as your travels continue…
