This project was inspired by designers’ loved ones that have severe allergies, one passed away and the other one had a close call, simply because they didn’t bring Epipens with them that particular day. PREPI is a concept epinephrine auto-injector, small enough to fit inside your pocket. Unlike Epipens, they are too big and required follow up actions. PREPI is a smart medical device that uses CO2 canisters instead of a large spring, it can be connected to an app to help you call 911, locate nearest hospital, and notify loved ones, automatically. This smart system helps to reduce panic that might come along with a severe allergic reaction, it also eliminates follow actions that are needed to be done by the patient order to survive.

PREPI consists of two components, the pen and the case. User can remove the safety cap off the pen and press PREPI against outer thigh, the inner housing snaps a spiked platform that punctures a CO2 cartridge inside. That high air pressure injects needle and epinephrine into user’s body. Once air escapes the system, there’s a smaller spring that pushes back empty syringe into the housing for safe disposal. The case is not just a case, it’s a smart device that connects to user’s smartphone. It is equipped with Bluetooth low energy module, a photo-resistor, temperature sensor, and a small battery. Once its photo-resistor detects that a PREPI has been remove, it sends a push notifications to user’s phone to direct them to emergency services in PREPI app. Designed by Lulu McRoberts and Jack Johnston, the case can accommodate up to two injectors.
