Parafree Wheelchair by Felix Lange

The Parafree wheelchair is a sporty core-body training machine for paraplegics with the outstanding benefit of comfort in everyday use. Its design language and structure support active users in self-confidence and independence as you already know, sport can be a passion and helps reduce depression. Sport inspires hope and eases disappointments. This concept wheelchair compels the paralyzed user to keep balance permanently.

The unique and minimalist frame structure of this wheelchair is made of low-cost hydroformed industrial steel. It is light-weight as well as aluminum structure models and retains its necessary rigidity by adapting geometries known from bicycles. The flexible PARACORE base-element under an innovative customized seat-shell leads to an unstable sitting experience.

The paraplegic who is just able to use the upper part of his body defines abdominals, back muscles and in total all tiny deep muscles of the core body. The interaction of arms and core muscles leads to an upright position and reduces orthopedic damage.

The Paracore-Element of Parafree wheelchair copies the three-dimensional movements of human discogenics. This allows a wider range of interactions. Different designs allow for the foamy element to be covered over with benefits like companion-handlebar, optional back lean or luggage rack. The medical aid product “Wheelchair” thereby becomes an innovative training and minimalist streamlined product.

  1. It's pretty, and well rendered, but really only thought out on a superficial level, rather than a functional one. I doubt that the designer has ever been in a wheelchair. Otherwise, he would know that there's a reason wheelchairs, like cars, shopping carts, skateboards, and pretty much anything else that transports something has four wheels, not three. It's about stability. It's the reason three wheeler ATVs got outlawed years ago (three vehicles typically have a single wheel in back). The same goes for the rear, anti-tip wheel. There needs to be 2 back there, or else you'll fall over sideways when tipping back. The seat strap is just ridiculous. Wheelchair users need to be able to shift their weight regularly to prevent pressure sores. A strap that needs to be repeatedly undone to do this is very inconvenient. The same goes for the foot straps. An able-bodied person would have no problem pulling their leg back to insert the foot, but doing so for a paraplegic would be a pain in the butt. Foot straps will not prevent spasticity, and may be more likely to cause it (since there would now be stimulus on the top of your foot as well). There are no brakes, and there's also not much room to transfer out of the chair, without lifting up over the wheel (and, presumably, the seat strap that is now folded over it). The suspension mechanism in the front wheel would quickly jam up with dirt and lint, as any wheelchair user would know happens with regular caster wheels. That said, it's a very pretty 3D project, and looks neat.

    • Really? Sorry to say to you: this is quit poor argumentation. Have a look first.
At this stage it is of course just a concept. It is 4 years ago…

Developed in close atmosphere with a paralized sporty guy.
      Parafree is not a mass-product!

And sorry again, it has also brakes… It is really boring to read non lineared minds like yours. First of all: See the pictures. Second: Ask if you not know the facts…. Third: Be happy that some guys already start to design also some the next generation of wheelchairs. The Core-Idea is to convert a medical product into a streamlined and attractive lifestyle product. It will help to reduce spasm just by its unique paracore -(body core muscle training).. and of course you don`t need straps all the day: what you see is the sporty mode of parafree 😉

thank you and have fun on tuvie.com!

      Sorry for my late answer…
