NiNite Smart Pacifier Monitors Your Baby Sleeping State to Respond Accordingly

In cooperation with Baby Goose, Hive Design has developed world’s first smart pacifier, NiNite. Shane Rogers, the designer, explains that having little ones of his own, he is too familiar with the impact associated with retrieving lost pacifiers throughout the night. NiNite solves this problem by making your child’s favorite binky a smart pacifier. A small sealed enclosure attaches to the pacifier and houses a series of microscopic sensors which continuously monitor the state of your child’s sleep. As your child begins to search for their pacifier, the NiNite responds accordingly by glowing, buzzing, and blinking.

Unlike glow-in-the-dark pacifiers that act as a fading beacon of light in the child’s mouth, the NiNite is only active when it’s needed. While the baby is sleeping, its “OFF” and functions as a normal pacifier. When the pacifier falls out of the child’s mouth and also senses the child to start to wake up and fuss, it begins to softly glow and lightly buzz to help the child (or parents frantically running into a dark room) easily locate the pacifier. As soon as the NiNite is grabbed, it immediately reverts back to its “OFF” state.

Over the years, pacifiers have been somewhat of a polarizing topic. Parents who rely on them can’t imagine living without them, where others couldn’t imagine putting one in their child’s mouth. Like them or hate them, The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that parents consider offering pacifiers to infants one month and older at the onset of sleep to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Smart baby products as a category have seen significant growth in the last few years. With many companies attempting to offer a solution to monitor a child’s vitals (heart rate, oxygen, temperature, activity level, etc), the NiNite takes an alternative approach. The purpose of the NiNite from Hive Design is to remove one barrier to a good night’s sleep. It’s more a product for the parents than it is for the child.

NiNite is in response to the overwhelming feedback from a national survey of new parents, last February. NiNite is not currently taking orders. “We’re looking for a pool of new parents who are passionate about the topic that can act as our sounding board. Love it…Hate it…Want a specific feature set?…We want to hear from you.” Shane Rogers, Designer
