MESA Portable Light Emits Soft Warm Glow That Doesn’t Hurt Your Eyes

Submitted by Ravi Varma, MESA is a concept portable light that operates based on simple principle, a light should shine where you are looking and not in your eyes. This light offers revolutionary form factor that provides directed light without glare, it allows you to see indoors and out. Designed to be tall enough to work under yet short enough to see over, this light is perfect for different kinds of situations from picnic to work. This project started by creating a light for picnic table in the designer’s backyard then it was gradually involved into a new lighting concept. Ravi was frustrated by traditional lanterns that are based on the same form factor as classic Coleman gas lamps. These lamps would emit light to all direction and could invariably blind everyone around the table.

Coming from a background high end interior lighting Ravi Varma wanted to light the space and focus on light quality. The main goal of this project was to create soft warm glow light just like a restaurant or a bar with overhead pendants, yet it should be battery powered and highly portable. The result is not a hanging light, it’s a light that you can place just under eye height, allowing itself to block the glare from the light source.

By using the latest lithium battery technology and LED technology MESA can be packed down into a slick easy to pack profile. It’s made from a single piece of machined aluminum and the legs snap into place using a bungee system with tapered ends inspired by tent poles. MESA is great for all kinds of situations like camping, in the workshop, or just hanging out in the backyard. You can help bring this project to life by backing up its crowd funding campaign here.
