Light of Inspiration : A Light Design That Was Inspired by Spain

Light of Inspiration” was a design submission from postgraduate student of Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, School of Architecture and Design. This lamp was the result of one of class projects where the brief was to translate a culture, history and identity of country into an object. Although “Light of Inspiration” lamp was only made from vellum transparent paper, it looks pretty awesome, we love the layering design that forms into hexagonal shape.

Recently I was assigned a project in which we selected a country (mine being Spain), study a film from the corresponding and identify important aspects of their culture, history and current identity. This research was then to be translated into any object in which we desire. I chose to focus on the divergent public and private lives in which the Spanish people live.

From this idea I felt it was appropriate to model a light as this would allow me to play with the ideas of transparencies, hidden secrets and personal perceptions. From these ideas I created the light which I have attached images of.

Vellum transparent paper was used to allow a build-up of layers (like in private lives) without losing essential lighting qualities. This material was formed into hexagonal shapes using wire framing to create a connection with the traditional muxarabis (Spanish blinds). The hexagonal shape also created an interesting faceted surface, having strong links to modern Spanish architecture with clean sharp lines and a simple white surface. The inner tile patterns of the light which have been laser cut come from some of the imagery in which Antonio Gaudi used in his works. These tiles allow shadow patterns to be created throughout the light and on surrounding surfaces, almost as if revealing an inner secret.

Overall I feel that the light has captured the key ideas and aspects in which I set out to achieve while also providing an interesting and new architectural/furniture piece.
