Kanban Side Table Was Inspired by Hong Kong’s Historic Industrial Buildings

Kanban Side Table has been designed as private collection by Andrea Ponti, an Italian designer currently based in Hongkong. It’s a concrete and steel side table that pushes the boundaries of form and aesthetic, past and present. It aims to capture Hong Kong in a product by embracing the spirit of cosmopolitan metropolis at the crossroads between East and West. The concept table was drawn from essential components of base and top from innovative use of materials, layout, color, and shape. The use of steel and concrete mimics the style of Hong Kong’s historic industrial buildings where former multi-story factories transformed into offices and warehouses. Even the unique shape was inspired by large neon signs that light up busy streets of Kowloon. The contrasting colors of neutral concrete and charcoal give the table a minimalist pictorial quality, creating a chiaroscuro – an effect of contrasting light and shade. The float horizontal top floating above vertical cylinder base creates exquisite contrast between density and airiness.
