Healing Bench : Practical and Highly Functional Disaster Relief Equipment by Adrian Candela

Healing Bench is a ingenious disaster relief equipment design that converts from a backpack to an operating bench in second. This unit can hold a blanket and a medical kit in a way that allows medical workers to work in harsh conditions easily. With traditional medical kit, these workers have to deal with troubles in carrying their tools, work hands-free, and the lack of clean area to treat the disaster victims. These men and women risk their lives to try to save countless people, therefore practicality is not only useful but also essential. During design process, the industrial designer was inspired by a compactable chair, kayak construction, lifeguard floaters and medical stretchers. He wanted to design a simple yet highly functional equipment to help its user to better accomplish their tasks.

Healing Bench can be transformed into a flat clean operating surface as well as a seat when necessary. It’s been designed with straps made of 5cm webbing to help secure the bench legs when open and convert to a backpack for convenient mobility. The fleece blanket is not only used for patients being treated but also functions as a back pad in “backpack” mode.
