Inspired by traditional Chinese temple gateway, Napp Studio & Architects has designed a Golden Gate as the entrance of Flower Market of Causeway Bay, Hongkong. It’s a tradition during Lunar New Year, Chinese people would hope for luck, prosperity not just for oneself, but also family and friends. This tradition is also followed by countless gatherings with relatives and friends. You will notice crowds would flood temples on New Year’s day, wishing for good fortunes, and they will also visit Flower Market before that special day.
Flower Market is the perfect place to buy accessories and cute dolls, as well as festive flowers and plants to decorate their homes. It can be said that Flower Market is the temple Chinese people have to visit before New Year’s day.
Because of this tradition, Napp Studio & Architects wants to combine the meaning of flower market as a “temple” through this Golden Gate. It would act as a unique entrance for the Flower Market just like we usually see the gate of a temple. Golden Gate design was translated from complex architectural expression into an abstract form as an entrance. It symbolically infuses “temple” into the market. Instead of building a solid block, the design uses a lattice structure that is adopted to minimize the visual blockage and structural load while still highly recognizable as a landmark, which can be seen from a distance.
The primary material is metal pipe, electroplated in gold or copper, it is combined with concrete mass on either side as footings. The circular reflective geometry of the tubes, with sunlight from above during the day or flood light from below during evening, would create a gleaming Golden Gate that celebrates the entry of the Flower Market. This awesome gateway could also serve as a photogenic spot that attracts people to take pictures, making great memories that conclude their journey of previous year.
