The concept of an autonomous bus was developed in cooperation with and for the mobile service provider “Vectalia”. The primary objective was to create a unique design language and to adapt it to the requirements in terms of safety, space and additional functions.
The inspiration for the design of the STREAT bus came from a carriage. Andreas Grasmück, the designer, wanted to create a feeling of being chauffeured in a special way with a unique exterior and interior. This everyday public transportation, should also combine multiple purposes, like air cleaning and a mobile packing station. Due to complex requirements, the exterior design of the bus should have a clearly identification and understandable without clustering all elements too much. Even those large side windows are tinted in body color for clean look and optimum privacy feeling.
Vectalia STREAT bus comes in two color schemes, the big silver grey side panels and dark middle structure. This color combination provides high contrast and good visibility in traffic without using bright colors. The hood contains an airbag in case of an unavoidable pedestrian collision and consists of a soft structure in the front for soft collisions.
The LED strips on the rims and on top of the fender would shine in bright orange while driving as warning. While boarding, the color changes from green to red, depending on the boarding situation. The color code is visible through multiple lights all around the bus for clear communication with the environment.
In addition to passenger transport, the bus can be used as a mobile packing station. It serves as private individuals, as well as the postal service.
Andreas Grasmück explains that all wheels are steerable with flexible and durable cloth covering the moving area. In this way a cleaner look is achieved by hiding the steering and driving mechanism, it provides good maneuverability even in narrow streets.
