Brot, is a beautiful light that also grows food. It’s a furniture for food, just like its name, Brot means sprout in Catalan, and this lamp is also a germinator. Don’t worry, it sounds horrible, but it doesn’t have anything to do with germs, it’s just a device to grow sprouts. Brot is a unique project that wants to give you a new way in understanding food and furniture. It’s a lamp that provides warm and cozy environment, yet it’s also a platform to grow your own food.
Designed by Caterina Vianna and Ferran Gesa, Brot consists of two elements made of terracotta and screen. Terracotta is the vessel that holds stainless steel tray with seeds, while the screen redirect lights to the sprout and the room. At the center, there’s a circular opening that allows light to pass through, creating a defined light spot bellow it. These elements create dialog between food and furniture, it responds to society growing concern in following a healthier lifestyle.
How it works?
1. Place the seeds soaking on the vessel piece, for example peas need about 12h soaking. Just make sure that the seeds are completely covered.
2. After specified time, you can put those seeds onto the stainless steel tray and moisten the seeds for two to three times a day.
3. And after four to six days, you can witness those sprouts growing and ready to be eaten.
