The design of Blockitecture Usonian is inspired from Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes, which are characterized by their low, sprawling forms that reflect the wide and flat landscapes of America. A significant portion of Wright’s designs are based on a hexagonal grid, which is also a foundational element in the Blockitecture series, making Blockitecture Usonian a natural extension of the product line.
Wright designed these hexagonal buildings, most notably Kentuck Knob and Hanna House, because he believed the hexagonal grid to be more natural and human-centered. As he explained, “I am convinced that a cross-section of honeycomb has more fertility and flexibility where human movement is concerned than the square. The obtuse angle is more suited to human ‘to and fro’ than the right angle.” Wright’s implementation of this unconventional grid created a calmer, more elegant aesthetic compared to traditional perpendicular layouts.
The purpose of Blockitecture Usonian, however, is not to recreate specific hexagonal buildings like Hanna House or Kentuck Knob. Instead, it allows people to build their own unique structures within Wright’s hexagonal grid system. Designed by James Paulius, the aim of this design is to empower users to explore and create freely, fostering imagination rather than architectural replication. Users can create structures that evoke the essence of Wright’s design philosophy, with key aesthetic details such as the wide overhanging canopies and clerestory windows. Through this, Blockitecture Usonian introduces future architects to a unique approach to shaping our built environment, while preserving the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. [Buy It Here]
