What happens when a boat builder and a programmer meet? You see the result here: Auto Boat. This project was born out of collaboration between Will Reed, a boat builder and Jonas Jongejan, a programmer. Featuring Featuring wanted to bring an experience rather than just a seat for the exhibition of “Out of the Woods: Adventures of 12 Hardwood Chairs” at the Victoria & Albert Museum. This exhibition aims to develop a life cycle analysis of every project in the exhibition for AHEC.
Auto Boat is a special boat designed to carry single passenger in comfort on a pre-determined journey set into a smartphone. The special app would then drive the propulsion system, sending the passenger to their destination. There’s no need for rudder, there are 2 small motors set to either side of the boats controlled by boat’s computer and GPS.

This boat is built of marine ply, veneered in American cherry. The material was chosen due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and for its color. It’ll darken in sunlight. The keel is constructed of American white oak, durable and heavy. This boat is pretty small with dimensions of 2.4m long and 950mm wide, but spacious enough for one person to drift meditatively across the water.
