Submitted by Huira Koo and Semina Yi, Aliens is an innovative project dedicated to help children build better relationship with friends from different backgrounds. We are living in a global world. It is not easy to be open-minded and get along with unfamiliar people. People need more information and motivation to each other. Especially, young generation needs better supports to interact with each other both physically and emotionally.
According to UN report, 60 million people have been displaced to other countries. Among them, 40% are children who are facing invisible barriers. Many organizations are focusing on immigrants’ identification and legal issues. On the other hand, awareness to both children and their social relationship is still low. Aliens is a set of a wearable wristband and an app game, that encourages children to build up relationships with friends from different backgrounds and cultures, through both physical and digital interactions.

Aliens detects mutual activities through the motion sensor on the wristband, and gives rewards on the digital game based on the experience. By learning about each other’s cultures and lifestyles, the app gives points on the game as it changes children’s perspectives from unfamiliar newcomers to teammates who could play with.
Ultimately, Aliens teaches the children to become more culturally fluent by themselves, and leads children to grow up open-minded persons; targeting present, but also the future. Parents can also use the app as an educational tool, as well as they can monitor their children’s relationships through the app. Moreover, the parents can build up cultural understanding through Aliens with their children, indirectly. Lastly, the silicone wristband itself communicates the idea of living together in peace with public, raising people’s awareness.
