Submitted by Leonardo Graziano, Thames Express River Boat is a concept personal project designed for public and tourist river transportation system. London has been chosen as the city scenario where to imagine and define the concept. Many inspirations have been taken from historic and modern symbols of English Architecture and Design. You can read his explanation below.
River boats offer a unique solution for urban mobility because their use requires very little construction costs: unlike trains or buses, they can use a natural resource to move around, rather than having to rely on a rail or road. The only capital expenditure required concerns the construction of the ferry terminals and the purchase of the same vessels.
London has been chosen as the city scenario where to imagine and define the concept. Many inspirations have been taken from historic and modern symbols of English Architecture and Design. The user experience, not only spatial, has been faced introducing in the main deck an area dedicated to infotainment activities.
Leonardo Graziano explains that during the research stage many similar boats have been examined and many interesting examples have been found from London, Paris, Istanbul, Tokyo and New York. In particular, the Paris Trimaran typology enabled one of the first shape ideas of a continuous curved bow and aft. From the competitors and similar boats research emerged that the best construction material is aluminum, it’s the best material for this kind of boats produced in limited numbers. After the construction material of Thames Express River Boat concept has been defined, the shape definition has immediately been oriented to a continuous single volume defined by a simple surface. The extended glass surface that defines the bow has a constant curvature allowing an efficient modularity and so manufacturing optimization. Hexagonal structures support and define the profile of the glass surface. In the upper deck an integrated “stair seating” solution allows the passengers to enjoy the environment 360-degree.
