Leah Heiss, in collaboration with Nanotechnology Victoria, has developed a range of jewelry with therapeutic properties. Leah was NanoVic’s first artist in residence from September 2007-June 2008, supported by Arts Victoria and the Australian Network for Art and Technology.
Diabetes Jewelry
Diabetes jewelry is a neckpiece and rings for administering insulin through the skin via a nano-engineered patch. The Diabetes Neckpiece is a wearable applicator device to apply Nanotechnology Victoria’s NanoMAPs to the skin. NanoMAPs are small (10 x 2mm) circular discs which have an array of micro needles on their surface. They allow for pain-free delivery of insulin to the body, replacing syringes. The Diabetes rings are designed to keep the nano-engineered insulin patches against the skin once they have been applied.

The Master LED bulb from Philips has the same form as an old-fashioned one, making it simple to use for the people and feel comfortable about using it. Even though the bulb draws 7 watts only, it gives off light equal to a 40 watt bulb and lasts around 45,000 hours which about 30x the length of a normal bulb. This Master LED bulb is available in Europe already and should reach the North American shores before July.

Sourdine is one of the speaker designs for the Wi-Fi systems. The gadget incorporates the best of technology which aims to serve the young generation. The body of this particular speaker is made from a material that has elastic properties. This is the reason why the device can soften the effect of the music. But because of the elastic property the volume of the speaker can be enhanced and increased. This is also capable of hosting the Wi-Fi connection in various types of music systems. This is evidently a great device that expresses the tunes of music in the softest yet audible manner.

Fipa is a brand new smoking concept specially designed for women with tasted tobacco in individual units. The main starting point of this business development plan was figuring out a design solution that would give a feel like a woman’s smoking device. This understanding led the founder to develop Fipa as a luxury icon for women. The inspiration came from the women in the golden era from 1940s to 1960s, when using a cigarette holder was a common issue to maintain a decent distance from mouth to cigarette. Lawrence Chu, an exceptionally talented Canadian designer, designed the final form of chromium-platinum Fipa.

From the website:
“We looked back in history and discovered that until the end of the Victorian period it was quite well accepted for women to smoke pipes in Europe, but due to cultural changes it became unfashionable, thus eventually becoming associated strictly with masculinity over the course of the last century.
The real inspiration came from looking at women in the golden age of smoking, from the 1940s to the 1960s, when it was common to use a cigarette holder to extend the distance from cigarette to mouth to cool the smoke. You can probably guess that this culminated in the iconic image of Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with long black gloves and equally long black cigarette holder.
It was this image that convinced us that, for an object, the secret to feminine elegance is a simple linear slenderness. That’s what we tried to communicate in the fipa.”

One can say without a hitch of a doubt that the bicycle is one of the most environment friendly modes of transportation designed by man. It also is a good medium of exercise so to say as the driving force is one of organic human effort. This new bicycle design called OM-Organik Motion is based on the Z – frame concept, which features integrated systems such as integrated front and rear suspension and an integrated shaft drive. The handlebars and saddle are adjustable and the joystick mounted gear and brake lever system are incorporated along with safety features such as reflectors on the outer wheels and in built-in taillight. Enjoy!
