Microwave Powered Space Launch Thruster by Escape Dynamics

This is the world’s first externally powered Space Launch Thruster, Escape Dynamics have successfully tested their combustion free spaceflight that uses high power microwave energy. The result is really promising with performance greatly surpassing the limit of conventional chemical combustion rockets. This project is a major step forward advancement in future externally powered high Isp thruster, it is also a validation for company’s efforts to change the manner of orbital launches. Dr. Dmitriy Tseliakhovich, the CEO, believes that we can develop a new propulsion technology that beats chemical rockets and can be used for orbital launch works a lab scale and eventually into single-stage-to-orbit spaceplanes. This project will certainly change the way we reach orbit.

By implementing this technology, it is possible to bring to the market reusable, single-stage-to-orbit spaceplanes. It can be just aircraft-like operations to orbit, thus, drastically decrease the cost of access to space for payloads up to 200kg.

Smart for Kids : An Autonomous Vehicle for Kids by Ryan Olsson

With the rise of autonomous self driving vehicles, individual transportation can be utilized by not only adults but children. These children will have unique demands for the cars that they use. Automatic crash avoidance, interactive display panels and unique seating arrangements will allow tomorrows youth to readily adopt this new individual transportation system. Having the keys to your very own car at a young age will teach kids responsibility and provide them with a feeling of individuality in an increasingly anonymous world. No longer will parents need to drive their children to school or soccer practice, freeing parents to focus on other aspects of life.

Smart for Kids Project has been designed for these purposes, these vehicles can either entertain the children while en route or the onboard interactive display can be used to teach the children. This effectively makes the educational process begin as soon as the occupant boards the vehicle.

As children dont have jobs, clever marketing can help offset the cost of vehicle purchase. Companies such as Pixar, Disney and Marvel Comics can purchase advertising space on these vehicles to drive traffic to their products.

Artificial Snow Cave Rope Shelter by Margot Krasojevic

Artificial Snow Cave Rope Shelter is a design submission from Margot Krasojevic. It looks like a futuristic shelter that would protects you against freezing weather, perfect for mountain climbers looking to find a place to rest. You can read Margot’s complete explanations below.

The hut offers a snowdrift frame made from weighted carbon fibre mesh, this contoured landscape mimics the surrounding vertiginous precipices and landscapes, the carbon fiber snowscape creates an artificial snow cave which can be dug into and around enabling climbers to inhabit the structure in a similar way to a snow cave. The composite carbon frame catches the snowdrift using snow as an insulating material, as it is a mesh structure pockets of rooms can be carved into the build up of snow as well as air vents to help with air circulation, it is possible to further insulate the structure by digging a small pit deeper into one part of the cave floor to provide a place for the coldest air to gather, away from the occupants, the entrance may be partially blocked with chunks of snow to deflect wind and retain heat.

KAZbrella Inside Out Umbrella Won’t Drip On The Floor

Wow, look, someone actually makes inside out umbrella design into production. The first time we saw an inside out umbrella was from Ilmo Ahn’s submission, perhaps KAZbrella was inspired by that project as well. We think the name is self explanatory, it’s a reverse folding umbrella that allows you to enjoy drip free umbrella.

KAZbrella opens inside out, just like a flower, it leaves the wet side of the canopy contained inside when closed, it won’t wet the floor. The design allows you to smoothly open and close in a crowd, avoiding accidental poking of other people. The double spoked design makes it extremely strong even against strong wind. In the even of your umbrella is blown inside out, simply click the button on the handle to restore back to its open shape.

Echoes of a Nearby Future Part Deux : Futuristic Formula 1 Concept Car

we have featured Echoes of a Nearby Future before, this time, Andries van Overbeeke wants to introduce you to the second part, he even made a cool storyline for this project. You can read his explanations below.

As an artist and designer it is my task to visualize what is yet to be seen. To explore ideas that linger in the community and listen to the friction people experience with the status quo, and the desires they feel for the direction of development. In ‘Echoes of a Nearby Future’ I distill something tangible out of the discussions about the future of Formula 1.

This time we take on the car of Red Bull, a brand that lends itself perfectly for an extreme, badass concept. A matte black jet fighter inspired beast, branded with large patches of contrasting sponsoring. I think my Williams concept was more realistic, however one of the functions of art is the exploration of boundaries of what is possible. If specific traits or details on this Red Bull concept go too far and are unrealistic, we have established something very important: we now know what is impossible. Be careful though. Classifying something as ‘impossible’ should require quite some thought and imagination. History shows that there have even been occasions where people were proven wrong…
