Nokia has released an innovative and futuristic phone concept called Nokia GEM phone. If you feel the display on the phone isn’t big enough, how bout turning the entire handset into a touchscreen? This is what Nokia GEM phone concept offers you. This futuristic phone was launched as part of the celebration of Nokia Research Center 25th anniversary. You can see that GEM has the ability to change its appearance from camera to phone based on the functionality selected by its user. In fact, this phone can display advertising messages on its back.

User could have the same image at different zoom levels, such as when you read a map, it’s possible for you to zoom and pinch the map from the rear of the phone while keeping the view of a large scale area on the front. Smart idea huh?

Communicaid system has been designed to facilitate a communication between deaf or hearing impaired people and hearing people. One of our senses that enable us to interact with our environment and other people would be our ears, however for hearing impaired people, they don’t have all the benefits from hearing the sound. It makes them really hard to engage with others. The goal of this project is to design a device which would make communication easier for hearing impaired people in the world full of amazing sounds. This system has been designed specifically for people who were born deaf and did not acquire language early or were born hearing impaired, but lost it in early childhood.

Communicaid system consists of Visual Sound Station, Visual Sound Glasses, and Mobile Communicator which three of them are portable devices for different situations. Visual Sound Station captures sounds from the environment to alert hearing impaired people visually through its lights and pictograms. The glasses work similarly to Visual Sound Station but this one is a wearable device, perfect to use while the user is having outdoor activities. The Mobile Communicator is a handheld communication device that can be used to communicate with other people efficiently and conveniently.

Good news guys, ever since we featured Armadillo folded backpack, there are numbers of you who’ve been asking where to get one. Dutch design studio Lijmbach, Leeuw & Vormgeving have shared with us the news that they have decided to develop the prototype into production. Of course the final backpack design has changed considerably since the previous prototype, however, rest assure, it’s getting larger and better. In fact, you can keep your laptops up to 15.6” in this backpack and the new compartments can be used to keep your cell phones or any other small items.

Ferrari Millenio is a design study of a futuristic electric vehicle powered by two stations (engines). It is a two-seater car, very light, and designed with strong impact from the Ferrari world park in Abu Dhabi. This vehicle has been developed as a structure of several pieces proportionally designed and well combined in one. Ferrari Millenio provides an illusion in its way of very complex assembling process, as you can see here, the front lights look like they are floating and not attached.

Just like the case of an iPhone, here’s the designer has also designed a silicon layer that can be additionally added as a protection. Ferrari = dream = safe dream.

Marchi Mobile is presenting an exclusive limited lots of world class recreational vehicle series called eleMMent, featuring a unique combination of yachting, aviation and motor sports aspects. The futuristic and extraordinary design of the RV has been achieved through contemporary elements uniting in a harmonious way. The cutting edge design along with great combination of exterior color has given the vehicles a notable aerodynamic appearance. Besides, the windshield as well as the driver’s cab is something you have never even imagined. The interior is equipped with baroque stylistic elements of Austrian-Italian interior architecture that gives the rider a unique experience of luxury, comfort and elegance. Powered by a 510hp, automatic transmission engine, the 12 meter long vehicle can produce reasonable speed for long distance transportation.

Coral Rasa has been designed to protect world’s coral reefs which have been destroyed by human through unfriendly fishing habits, global climate change, or water pollution. Based on statistic, 20% of world’s coral reefs are gone while 60% of them are under great risk of collapse. Many people still don’t realize why it’s so important to protect coral reefs. Well, besides providing underwater tourism revenue and medications, there are many animals depend on coral reefs to survive, in fact, coral reefs are biologically productive. They occupy only one tenth of one percent of the world’s ocean surface, yet they provide home for one-third of the world’s marine species. Basically if these coral reefs are gone, so will one-third of the world’s marine biodiversity.

We think Mac Funamizu was inspired by “Knock Knock Joke” when he designed Von mobile phone. The phone has been designed to be sensitive to sound to do some tasks, especially the knocking sound. Want to read unread emails or new phone messages? Just knock your phone and it will knock back with various sounds based on the kind of messages you haven’t read. Von mobile phone design looks like a xylophone, almost as tall as an iPhone but with narrower body.

Just like iPhone, this phone responds to shakes. User can shake it to see if there’s any unread RSS feed or Tweet, the more unread items the more it rattles. The designer wants to bring back your childhood memory through this device, remember when you shook a box of candy just to see how many were left?

Other unique feature of this phone would be the rhythm tap function. Tapping on this phone on the rhythm of your favorite song is the same as requesting the phone to detect the song you’re tapping. Von mobile phone will detect the song and start playing it along with the tap.

Tron Style phone is a mobile phone that has been designed in inspiration from the movie TRON legacy. Well, the design goals indicate creative interpretation of a futuristic cellphone. The design integrates LED lighting with sleek dark chrome finishing, creating a gallant futuristic look. It features an audio output, a power connecting port, an LED Ring identifier touch-sensitive area and power level indicator.

Here are the top 25 concepts from Electrolux Design Lab 2011. The concepts have been chosen from designers all around the world, where each of the designs offer smart and interesting solutions for future living. Eight finalists will be announced later this July where each will be invited to present their concept to a jury of expert designers.

1. Robo TAP Cleaner by Gyu Ha Choi (Handong Global University – South Korea)
Robo TAP Cleaner is a smart robotic vacuum cleaner where you can set a specific area for cleaning. The IPS system aligned with a simple remote control attached to the shoe or slipper of the user to over-ridden the automated cleaning. Just by tapping 2 times on a dirty spot, Robo TAP will be directed to that area, while 2 more taps will cancel your order. Three taps will return the vacuum cleaner to the regular cleaning area. Smart heh?

2. EcoWash Dinner Set by David Stockton (Massey University School of Design – New Zealand)
EcoWash is a great dishwasher to use when you don’t have electricity, such as boating, camping, or countryside vacations. Just place all the dishes into the round small washing machine, add some water and washing-up liquid, close the latch and turn the handle on the side. The interior rotates to wash all your dishes efficiently and effortlessly. When it’s finished, just open the small hatch to release the water. To dry the plates, turn the handle a few more times to create a centrifugal force. That’s really cool, eco-friendly, handy, and easy to carry around.

Designed by Apostol Tnokovski, our small ritual provoked this industrial designer to design seashell shaped headphones.
