Dodecaplex Space Ecosystem – “Revamp the Future”

Gazing into space has always generated interest and longing in humans desiring to learn about it, to know it, and with each day that passes, we are closer than ever to realizing interplanetary travel. However, the arrival to other solar systems has always been curtailed because of distances and current space motor technology, sustaining our desire to discover new frontiers anchored to our home planet.

The Dodecaplex Space Ecosystem is a project conceived to solve the current needs for space exploration, focusing on: avoiding dependency on Earth’s resources, adaptation to new technologies, and maintaining life. The Spacecraft will act as a future place of residence and method of transportation to other planetary systems. Various concepts are utilized in the creation of such a complex and sophisticated platform for space living and transportation. Applying membranes as functional units, separating spaces, protecting the Station from the exterior, we will maintain life.

Inside, you’ll be presented with minimalist yet futuristic interior based on a contemporary flexible open-plan living. Designed and developed to become next generation way of living, ALPOD is constructed of aluminum, creating both strong and light structure, making it easy to transport and set up. Next : Advanced Smart Transportation System for 2020

We have featured Next, futuristic transportation system in 2012, now, the third version of this concept has been updated with better design and more advanced technology. Next is designed to become modular self-driving vehicle where each module can join and detach to other modules on standard city roads. When 2 modules are joined, they create an open, bus-like area where passengers can stand and walk from one module to another.

Designed in Italy, this project creates transportation that can be driven autonomously on regular roads. You can join one or more modules where doors between these modules would fold and create a walkable open space. The mechanism is the key feature that makes this project radically different to another existing projects such as Rinspeed Micromax, Hiriko folding cars, or other modular road train system based on new railways.

Amazon Prime Air Drone Could Be Our Future Delivery System

It looks like future has come early, Amazon Prime Air Drone is future delivery system that could be implemented by most merchants in not so distant future. It looks like science fiction but it’s real, this drone is designed to safely deliver packages to customers in less than 30 minutes, it operates beyond the line of sight to distances of 10 miles. This unmanned aerial vehicles would definitely enhance the services that Amazon has already provided to its millions of customers, this drones would definitely offer rapid parcel delivery and at the same time, increasing overall safety and efficiency of the transportation system.

The job of Amazon Prime Air would be deliver packages up to 5 pounds, it flies under 400 feet and weighs less than 55 pounds. It is equipped with sophisticated “sense and avoid” technology as well as a high degree of automation so that it can be safely operated. Since safety is one of Amazon’s top priorities, Prime Air will not be launched until the company can demonstrate safe operations. This is an exciting technology, isn’t it? Amazon already has a dozen of prototypes, it means that we might witness these drones flying around delivering packages.

3D Printed Modular Habitat on Mars – Living on Other Planets Might Be Possible in The Future

Living on Mars might not be just a wishful thinking, NASA and America Makes have teamed up to launch 3D Printed Habitat Challenge where participants are tasked to design 3D printed habitat for deep space exploration. One of the finalists is Foster + Partners, this company has come up with 3D Printed Modular Habitat where the design outlines plans for a settlement on Mars. It is constructed by an array of pre-programmed, semi-autonomous robots prior to eventual arrival of the astronauts. The design boasts robust 3D-printed dwelling for up to 4 astronauts, constructed using regolith (loose soil and rocks), this material can be easily found on the surface of Mars.

This is not just rough idea, this project has considered multiple aspects from delivery, deployment, construction, to operations. This structure will be delivered in 2 stages prior the arrival of the astronauts, first, there are semi-autonomous robots that will select the perfect site and dig around 1.5meter deep crater. The second delivery would be the inflatable modules that sit within the crater to form the main core of the settlement. Communication between Mars to Earth might experience any delays or errors, therefore, deployment and construction is designed to take place with minimal human interference, the robots will rely on rules and objectives rather than defined instructions. This mechanism makes the system more adaptive to changes and any unexpected challenges.

Oakley Personal Gear Vehicle Interior Design Study for 2024

Submitted by Hyukwoo Kwon, this project is about a modern interior for personal vehicle. It’s been designed based on the idea what if Oakley designed for transportation, how would it turn out to be and what would be the outcome in the future?

This project is about how it would be if the car can wear the gear just like a person with backpack, glasses, or other accessories. Car interior is an environment made by many different products. How it looks if one person vehicle has replaceable function such as Oakley eyewear sunglasses. It is not only for the engine and steering wheel, but also the wheels and the backseat can be part of the gear for a particular function and customized style regardless of the terrain.

Oakley is a brand well known for its sports eyewear products. Beginning with the motorcycle anti-slip handle, Oakley has been growing up worldwide as comprehensive sporting gear company. It’s now not only known for fashion sunglasses or sports goggles, but also for clothing, backpack, shoes, watch, etc. Why Oakley? With the advent of 3D printing technology, product companies became better suited to incorporating more complex designs. This with Oakley brand’s design language, made it possible to envision the future story of the progression in the design industry. Above all, I chose Oakley to emphasize Oakley’s image of developing sports goggles, watch, boots all of which contained the sporty and protective design elements that aligned well with transportation interior design.

Our Top 20 Picks from A’ Design Awards & Competition Winners 2014-2015

A’ Design Awards & Competition has released the winning designs, we can promise you this, those designs are awesome! A good design speaks international language, that’s why this prestigious design award attracts thousands of designers worldwide waiting to showcase their best designs. The results of 2014-2015 are 836 winners from 83 countries in 89 different design disciplines. All winners would enjoy great exposure for their works, all award winning designs will be exhibited in Ireland, the World Design Hub 2015, Italy, and Holland, while the “invitation-only” Gala Night and Award Ceremony will be held in Lake Como, Italy on April 18.

This year competition was much harder than previous years due to increased competition by increased quality and quantity or works. Each entry was carefully evaluated by member of international jury panel of established academics, creative design professionals, press members, and entrepreneurs. The A’ Design Award and Competition 2014-2015 Edition was further endorsed by ICSID -International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, IFI – The International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers and ICOGRADA – International Council of Communication Design which imposed several additional criteria during evaluation and voting.

We have chosen 20 amazing designs (in random orders) among hundreds that we’d like to share with you:

1. Strata Chair by Ben Preston

Strata is a unique chair that demonstration the basic concept of “complimentary juxtaposition”. It demonstrates complexity made possible by using modern technology and traditional building methods. The unique spiral pattern on the exterior can be achieved by rotating plywood “bricks” upward, the voids from the pattern create a playful shadows while displaying true nature and construction of the piece as unity. The seat and footrests are polished to shine, creating a luxurious appearance that creates contrast to rough exterior surface.

m.U.C a.k.a Maglev Urban Commuter is a design proposal for our future urban transportation. With growing demand of mobility in mega city populations, it can lead to 2 urgent problems: shortage of fossil fuels and limitation of urban space. This project aims to develop futuristic inner city electric vehicle that is highly efficient and has the ability to create a harmonious and intelligent link between people and traffic.

The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion research car is a conceptual autonomous car that represents this auto manufacturer vision of our future mobility. The interdisciplinary team of experts from Mercedes-Benz has worked out wide variety of future scenarios that include different aspects of day-to-day mobility. Beyond its mobility function, one of these scenarios also includes taking this futuristic car as a private retreat that can offer an important added value for society at large. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said that people who focused mainly on technology didn’t grasp how autonomous driving would change our society, our car had great possibility to become more than just a transportation, but also a mobile living space.

Mercedes-Benz F 015 elevates comfort and luxury to a new level, this concept car offers a maximum of space and a lounge character on the inside, giving its passengers optimum comfort. Public Transport System for 2030 for PACE Forum Design Competition

The Public Transport System for 2030 project was carried out for PACE forum Design competition for the Category of “Emerging Market Mobility Vehicle”. The concept is a hybrid of public and private transportation providing quick access built with existing infrastructure with minimal space and time. The design addresses the shortcomings of Flyovers and metros (robust structures owing to dead weight) which would require high consumption of raw materials, construction time, and money. The future vision consists of pre built structures which would minimize traffic disruption during construction.

We notice that each flying pod can carry up to 2 person, yes it’s more private but we kinda hope that it can carry more persons to eliminate any queue. We believe there are many people who would choose to use this flyover instead of land transportation, because it’s fast and quiet.

Audi A 2.0 Concept Electric Car for Future Young Generation

Audi A 2.0 is a concept car that targets young generation from 18 to 30 years old. It’s the result of 15 months Master in Transportation and Automotive Design in Politecnico of Milan sponsored by Volkswagen and Audi. The main idea was to design an aesthetically pleasing and dynamic car for young adults, the designers started by analyzing the iconic brand characteristics as well as the target’s needs. The robotic technology also plays important part here as the team took inspiration from that, they wanted to play with the shape contrasts of Audi where the higher part is clean and smooth and the lower one is sharp cornered and refined. The interior of this electric car is focus more on smart technology and connectivity, it can accommodate up to 4 passengers even though the dimension of the car is actually reduced.

Urban Skyfarm : Future Vertical Farm for Urban Areas

Based on recent studies, in the future, most world’s population will live in urban areas, and the total of world population will increase by about 3 billion people. Urban Skyfarm proposal was inspired by Dr. Dickson Despommier’s concept of vertical farm, it’s a possible solution to deal with our future problems of land shortage, deforestation, and of course, environmental pollution due to over population.

The idea here is to locate a vertical farm in downtown of Seoul, right adjacent to the Cheonggyecheon stream which is an ideal place to host local food production and distribution. This skyfarm takes advantage of hydroponic system as substitution to soil based agricultural extensions, yet it is able to produce the same food but more efficient and healthy thanks to controlled environment (heat, light, moisture). Urban Skyfarm will be a zero energy facility, it uses renewable energy produced by both solar and wind energy for the production process, including transportation and food distribution.

Google Self-Driving Car Could Be The Future of Our Mobility

Google has released some images related to its Self Driving car project, it looks like a toy though, cute and compact. The progress looks good so far, imagine that you can go downtown for lunch without having to deal with the burden of driving or wasting 20 minutes to find parking. If this project comes to reality, we can kiss good bye to drunk and distracted driving.

Currently, Google is building some prototypes to make sure the car operates safely and autonomously without any human intervention. Google Self-Driving car won’t have any steering wheel, accelerator/brake pedal, because you don’t need them. The power lies within the software and sensors that do all the hard work for passengers. Simply press the start button, this car would take you anywhere you want to go, this should be the future of our mobility.

Architectural Vision of the Future : Aquapolitain by HWANG Tzy-Lung Stefan

Cities were first built at the water’s edge to benefit from its beneficence, but some are nowadays threatened by rising sea level and their lands will decrease while their growth always requires more space and the surrounding land no longer allow expansion. Building on the sea is more than conceivable, especially as technically feasible.

Several solutions exist today to build on the sea, the most common technique now is the landfill to create artificial land, however, the future rather belongs to floating architecture, less destructive to the seabed, but more flexible than land or landfill to allow mobility of facilities, where there are needs, no more destruction and reconstruction, place to relocation site.

New technologies are being developed to provide the foundation for these future large floating architectures, and the first achievements are in the ways of finalization. Ultimately, these floating architectures will be different from land architectures only by their foundations and their implementation. The way is open, but major preparatory projects are still needed to carry out cities on the water.
