Check out these Holcim Award Winners for North America announced in Montreal. The competition was held in 5 regions of the world on the Foundation for Sustainable Construction. There were almost 5000 projects from 90 countries that participated to encourage building constructions by keeping in mind technological, environmental, socio-economic, and cultural issues. Some of the projects are just unbelievable as they feature innovations that can be applied in homes and other buildings in order to contribute to today’s climate and energy challenges. Let’s see how helpful these next generation projects are going to be in reality.

This salad spinner combines eye-catching design and new drive mechanism which ensures that just one press of the “Smart Touch” lever sets the basket spinning at optimal speed to dry greens quickly and efficiently. One-button engages a disc brake that brings the basket to quick, sure stop.
Antoher product designed by RKS which also won IDEA award is the Zyliss Lock-n-Lift Can Opener, this one won IDEA Silver award 2008. Designed to be safer and easier to use than traditional can openers, the Lock-n-Lift locks onto the can with one squeeze, eliminating the need to continually compress the handles. Once the lid is separated from the can, the lid lifts easily with the built-in magnet.

When you have allergy, this device can be pretty handy for you. Sensix is a monitoring and response system for children susceptible to severe allergic reactions. It includes three age-specific monitors that are physically and aesthetically suited to each age group. When an allergic reaction occurs, the monitor alerts parents or caregivers while simultaneously identifying the location of the child and the medicine.
The automated epinephrine injector device is more compact, rugged and convenient than a standard EpiPen. It also notifies users when injectors need to be replaced. The system works in concert with proposed food labeling standards that would use graphical icons and colors on packaging to identify potential allergens before an exposure occurs. Essential, the company that designed Sensix won a bronze International Design Excellence Award for our Sensix Allergy Alert System design concept.
