Bicycle Design for People with Disabilities

Bicycle designer Gavin Smith has come up with a new bicycle design that will help people with disabilities to ride the bicycle independently. Sometimes disabilities like cerebral palsy can affect the basic motor functions such as balancing which results in their inability to ride a regular bicycle. The bicycle is designed such that the supports automatically allow them to balance and operate the same effortlessly. The design also instills confidence so that they can ride the bike without any assistance. Overall this is a good effort for community development and a nice thought which is a welcome change from all those high end concept cars.

Designer Yirong Yang has brought forward a truly interesting bicycle design at International Bicycle Design Challenge. ‘Rotation’ is a city rotating and folding bike concept design which seems to be a combination of unicycle and bicycle. You can make a choice as to what you wish to ride and consequently you can fiddle with the axis to give preferred shape. Although unicycle is for adventurers and will be a challenge for a normal human being to ride still riders admire it for its unique design. Collapsible Bicycle Concept by Blair Hasty

The collapsible bicycle concept designed by Blair Hasty was primarily designed as a vehicle for daily transport usage. Featured in the 2004 International Bicycle Design Competition in Taiwan the concept has the pedals shifted to behind the driver so the overall weight transfers from the lower back to forearms and pelvic bone and the posture while the rider is prostrate while riding the bike. The designer has utilized the space by placing a large bag at the creating a thus creating storage space for the rider. Also to add on it is collapsible and the bag comes handy then. So no need to look for parking space, take it straight to your workstation, plus it is healthier for your body by using bicycle for daily activities.
