Lane Splitter : Futuristic Car that Splits Into Motorcycles

Mark Wilson of Fast Company has a cool (or crazy) idea about a futuristic car with ability to split into 2 motorcycles. Argodesign has done a great job in visualizing this futuristic idea into something tangible and beautiful. Called as Lane Splitter, this futuristic vehicle is an all-electric vehicle that splits into 2 closed-top motorcycles when you need it to be. As a car, it might not look really cool, but when it transforms into 2 personal urban motorbike, it looks kinda stylish.

This project was lead by Chipp Walters, he had designed several projects for NASA in the 80’s and 90’s, as you can see here, he has turned something from idea and sketches into something realistic enough that people might buy it. This innovative car embraces asymmetry where the motorcycles could be flat on the inside but curved on the outside. It features safe locking mechanisms that would attach the vehicles near the bottom of the frame. The equipped auto parking system just like some smart cars have today can guide these motorcycles to park while docking together.

Illoto Motorcycle Can Take Up 2 Standing Passengers and A Driver in One Ride

Most motorcycles are designed for 2 people, however, there are many times we can see more people ride one motorbike in the name of “efficient”. It’s really dangerous and it might cause accident. Illoto is a concept motorcycle that takes group motorcycling safer, it can take up to 3 people on 2 wheels. This project features unique structure and incorporates the spirit of Tel Aviv City as major source of inspiration in its minimalist design.

The smooth and flowing lines and the major decision I’ve made to move from a combustion engine to an economically-aware electric engine supports a light and airy feel in the design. The coating- meant for the riders’ comfort rather than the concealment of mechanical parts- seems to be floating through space and air flows freely through, providing the impression that the motorcycle is almost hollow. The emphasis lies at its “heart”- the riders, rather than the machine.

By choosing for an electric motor, I went for a contemporary, economically and environmentally aware solution. Design-wise, the use of an electric motor- frees lot of space within the motorcycle, a fact that the body design accentuates: By placing the minimal “floating” bodywork panels, an almost “hollow” feeling was created.

Hephaestus Motorcycle by Bandit9

Hephaestus is the latest creation by Daryl Villanueva and his band of pirates at Beijing-based garage, Bandit9. They named the bike, Hephaestus, in honor of the Greek God of blacksmiths, craftsmen, sculptors and artisans.

An evolution of the 1988 Honda Bros 400, Bandit9 shed the bike’s original plastic exterior and refitted it with a more modern aesthetic; sporting an armor-like exoskeleton forged from steel. There’s nothing soft about the bike, except for maybe hand stitched black leather seat. The tank, gas cap, cowl, side covers and fender were all handcrafted from stainless steel.

The tank was designed to have a mid-line bevel that carries through to the cowl and the fender. The side-covers with a dotted grill pattern were crafted from sheet metal. The handlebars were replaced with clip-ons designed by Bandit9. The rear lights function both as turn signals and brakes. When you signal to turn, the corresponding light flashes. However, both rear lights flash red when you hit the brakes.

Lea-Francis Cafe Racer Design Is Inspired by Lea-Francis 1914 V-Twin Model

Inspired by Lea-Francis 1914 V-Twin model, John Bridge has come up with Lea-Francis Cafe Racer. Lea-Francis was a motorcycle manufacturer which closed down in 1924, but it didn’t stop Bridge from making that classic motorcycle design as his inspiration. The 1914 V-Twin model has bulky front end, drifting to the rear via the angular fuel tank, small single seat to finally the carry cases famously placed on both sides of the rear wheels.

Lea-Francis Cafe Racer motorcycle has brought those key elements to its design. Your eyes will be drawn to the the muscular front end, exposing the brushed aluminum front suspension and steering components. The fuel tank of the 1914 has been exaggerated and houses the hydrogen powertrain, lithium-ion batteries and motor within one single unit. This enables the design to be clean and elegant; directly corresponding to the original inspiration.
