Orbis Concept Car by Chris Storey

Orbis concept car was a final university project by Chris Storey. It’s a hybrid supercar that features innovative door mechanism that allows even people with mobility issues to easily drive this car. You can read what he has to say about this project below.

This is a concept spots car I designed in 3d for my final University Project. It is supposed to be a super user friendly sports car, being aimed at all age category’s. Whether you’re 65 and have back/ arthritis problems, you can still easily use this car. Just because a person might have certain mobility issues, it should not stop them from driving aesthetically pleasing cars.

It was challenging alone to find my own style/ design for the car let alone new unique ways to enter and exit the vehicle, especially when this is to be aimed at all ages. Due to the unique door mechanism’s in place, there is a large amount of room to enter and exit the car, which is a common problem on low sports cars. It also uses a hydraulic suspension system allowing the car to raise for speed bumps, or for those who may need extra assistance getting into the car. Before entry, the seat will also rise and rotate to face the driver, making it much easier for them to get in and out.

I wanted this car to be a blend of both form and function. This car is a hybrid performance vehicle, many of its body panels are able to be 3d printed, making it much easier to repair should any get damaged. It’s name “Orbis” comes from Latin meaning ’round’ which refers to the new unseen round interior in a car, based on social interaction. This alone should change the experience on car journeys.
