Mercedes Benz has unveiled their futuristic DICE dashboard concept during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The demonstration provides vision of the future of interactive and intuitive dashboard in premium automobiles. DICE (Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience) will transform your vehicle into a smart mobility partner via bidirectional interaction. Your future car will not only communicate with you as the driver but also with other vehicles and its environment to get all relevant information for your trip and practical use of it immediately. We’ve been featuring many futuristic transportations with the same idea, it seems that we’re getting closer by day.

The vehicle’s windshield becomes touch-screen area with brilliant display where essential digital information about the vehicle and its surroundings will be presented to you. Passengers can have gesture-based interaction with this information. Mercedes Benz would combine the Augmented Reality and natural gesture control to develop a new and exciting form of communication between passengers and vehicle’s surroundings. Mercedes Benz futuristic Dice dashboard concept mimics intuitive human behavior which involves emotional and social aspects to create unique driving experience. You can drive pass a club and hear a catchy song, you can easily transfer the music played into your car. Any news, buildings or communities information can be retrieved in an instant.

Mercedes Benz futuristic Dice dashboard concept will also inform you about other vehicles approaching intersections to protect you from hazardous situations. It is also smart enough to simplify your parking space search by informing you which space will become vacant soon. This information will be displayed on the windshield of your vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz Aero Trailer is a design study from Mercedes-Benz to develop a new generation of aerodynamic trailer that features 18% less wind resistance and reduce fuel consumption by 5%. The objective of this design study is to show to the world that it is possible to further reduce the already low consumption and low CO2 emissions of state-of-the-art trucks.

Designer : Mercedes Benz

In collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Commercial Vehicle Design department, they have managed to apply the same principles used in Mercedes-Benz Actros to bring wind resistance level down to 12 to 15 percent lower. The new Mercedes-Benz Aero Trailer front airdam reduces the distance to the tractor unit, thus lowering the wind resistance by one percent. The other contribution comes from the side trim panels design which contributes to 8 percent improvement. The overall design of this trailer is slightly draw-in at the front and characterized by an opening at the rear, in this way, it steers the air in the direction of the striking rear diffuser. The diffuser has the shape of a parallelogram and links up with the underbody paneling. This improves the wind resistance by one to two percent. The rear end taper design improves wind resistance by further seven percent.

By lowering the wind resistance level, Mercedes-Benz Aero Trailer provides great reduction in fuel consumption to almost 5 percent in real-life road traffic. Although the wind resistance level has been reduced, the fundamental load compartment design remains intact, the dimension remains unaffected. The only limitation would be the fact the this truck’s length measurement go over current permissible limit by almost half a meter. Therefore, it’s important to propose changes in legislation to permit Mercedes-Benz Aero Trailer to travel on the road.

Smart 341 Parkour concept features not only futuristic design but also interesting reporter story. Because this year, LA Design Challenge was not just about designing and developing car of the future, but also inventing a story worthy of Hollywood. These designers have convinced the jury of the LA Design Challenge 2011 with their film “Annie get the Grannies” that takes place every year within the framework of the Los Angeles Auto Show. This compact car design combines innovation and functionality with an exciting film plot to captivate jury from multi-discipline design professionals.

Designers : Sylvain Wehnert, Emiel Burki and Phillipp Haban

Smart 341 Parkour boasts groundbreaking super all-rounder design completed with a transparent passenger cell for optimum visibility. User can drive this car normally on the road, climb up or even fly, a perfect vehicle for reporter Annie Angle to research her story that she hopes will give a boost to her career as a journalist. For this genius story plot, Mercedes Benz designers won the first place in the Los Angeles Design Challenge 2011.

Annie Gets The Grannies

In a world of continuous change, in Cantpark City, reporter Annie Angle is beginning a new chapter in her life. Cantpark City is famous for its friendly people, the beautiful weather, but notoriously known for a lack of parking spaces. On an early Sunday morning, an article in a newspaper catches Annie’s eyes… “Smart Granny Robots missing!!!”

Annie sets off on a journey to solve the mystery of the missing Grannies and to earn her first, potentially career-making, front page news article. Her Smart 341 Parkour vehicle plays a key role in this private investigation, providing both effective transportation and favourable sleuthing capabilities.

Several features enable her to take pictures from the best possible locations. The large greenhouse gives Annie 360 degrees of visibility while travelling through the inner city. The wheels are retractable and contain impulse pads and vacuum cups. The hexagon skin around the wheelhouse is adjustable to release the wheels. The Smart has different modes: a typical drive mode, a fly mode that allows the vehicle to hover far above the streets and a climb mode that allows the vehicle to run up the walls of skyscrapers.

Follow Annie’s investigative search in Smart’s “Annie get the Grannies!” this November.

BlueZero is the latest addition of the eco-friendly series cars by world renowned Mercedes-Benz. The main inspiration came from the idea of creating a vehicle that is affordable and eco-conscious, and can offer a multitude of platforms for daily use. Keeping the sandwich floor concept of Mercedes in mind, the structure of this concept car allows three different platforms to realize: first one is an E-Cell with battery, secondly E-Cell plus with gasoline and battery and the last one is an F-Cell with hydrogen. This concept allows the powertrain to be moved into the floor cells in the event of a front-end collision. This innovative is not only a great safety solution but also will help creating a universal platform.

From the design viewpoint, only the obligatory 3-pointed star placed in the center of the front grille has been seen common with other conventional Benz models. A sweeping curve is making the appearance of the car unique that begins right behind the front quarter and finishes up the beltline located near the back side of the car. This BlueZero concept is relying only on its existing architecture, practical thoughts and strong support from the confident customers.

The car is supposed to contain all the technologies that the top-shelved Mercedes cars have. It boasts a fiberglass and carbon fiber body structure, a compact fuel cell of 1.2kW is being used for power generation and the top speed of this car is 25 km/h. The car remains away from the traditional steering wheel rather it is using a joystick control for driving. The silly, big spoked bicycle wheels are another attraction of this car.

[Press Release]
Mercedes-Benz F-CELL Roadster – trainees build a car of the future

* Young people unite high tech and tradition

* Alternative drive systems as a training topic

In a hitherto unique project bridging various fields of profession, the trainees of Daimler AG at the Sindelfingen Mercedes-Benz plant have built a Roadster with fuel cell drive. For about a year, more than 150 trainees and dual education system students worked on the overall concept, development, assembly, and completion of the F-CELL Roadster. This project involved junior employees from the fields of automotive mechatronics, model-building, electronics, coating technology, manufacturing mechanics, product design, and interior appointments. The prime objective of the project was to integrate the topic of alternative drive systems into training with hands-on experience.

“This project impressively demonstrates that the topic of sustainable mobility has become an integral part of our vocational training,” said Human Resources Board member and Labor Relations Manager Günther Fleig. “I am delighted to see how much initiative and creativity the young people have put into this project.”

Tradition meets the future

The F-CELL Roadster uniquely combines state-of-the-art technologies with the history of vehicle construction. As an allusion to the Benz Patent Motor Car from 1886, the vehicle is fitted with large spoked wheels. Moreover, the F-CELL Roadster incorporates stylistic elements from diverse eras of automotive history, such as the carbon-fiber bucket seats with hand-stitched leather covers and the distinctively styled fiberglass front section, based on the component from the Formula One racing bolides.

The F-CELL Roadster is controlled with drive-by-wire technology, and a joystick takes the place of a conventional steering wheel. The vehicle is powered by the emission-free fuel cell system located at the rear.

Out of so many releases by Mercedes Benz, this has been the most unseen model of racing car. This car is named as Formula Zero, thereby featuring a new concept in the world of motor sports racing. Unlike a normal racing car, it is fitted with an elevation so as to provide an extra thrust to the wind consequently making it more difficult for the drivers to maintain the efficiency of the car. Hence, energy efficiency will be the integral part of sports with this Formula zero racing Car. Entire new concept of racing has been evolved, combining the thrill of formula one and the theory of track dynamics.

[Press Release]
Mercedes-Benz Formula Zero
Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center of North America

Luxury racing arrives in the Formula Zero Racer by incorporating the thrill of Formula One, the track dynamics of the bobsled or luge, and the grace and efficiency of yacht racing.

Reminiscent of the Mercedes Benz racing heritage of the 1930’s, the Formula Zero Racer is loaded with technology designed to extract the maximum thrust from the electric hub motors, aero-efficient solar skin and high-tech rigid sail.

Each team is allocated the same amount of stored energy and it is left to the teams and drivers to manage the variables to win the race. The winner is determined by total elapsed time combined with the energy efficiency factor.

Spectators at the Mercedes Benz Formula Zero racing Series are treated to a new dimension of racing as the transparent track is visible from all perspectives – even from below!
