Garrett Peebles has submitted his latest project to us. It’s a conceptual bluetooth speaker design study for a particular automotive brand. You can read his explanations about this project below.
This was for a branding project exercise in which a specific brand was chosen as well as a product in which that brand has no current connection to. I chose the automobile and truck manufacturer, Volvo, to be my brand and a Bluetooth speaker as the product to design using Volvo’s design language. After researching as many different types of Bluetooth speakers as possible, learning different materials used, their manufacturing processes, user interface features, and internal components, I proceeded to research the Volvo brand. Volvo uses unique design aspects such as the “side shoulders” which run down the length of the car, as well as their logo color scheme of navy blue, chrome, and black. They use high quality materials inside and out, giving Volvo their high reputation of safety, quality, elegance, and durability.

In the final Bluetooth speaker design, many visual aspects were carried through from the Volvo brand into the speaker’s form. Two milled and anodized aluminum side brackets hold the speaker body in place. These brackets mimic the iconic Volvo “shoulder” that almost every Volvo model has and they are made of solid aluminum, giving the speaker a durable and quality feel. The body of the speaker is wrapped in a thin blue anodized aluminum shell on the top, bottom and two sides. The front and back of the speaker is where the audio is projected. These sides are covered with a silver aluminum mesh, continuing the quality in materials which one would expect to see in any Volvo. The power, Bluetooth pairing, and volume buttons are placed on a black silicone keypad on the top of the speaker for easy access. Overall, this speaker delivers a high quality sound, is made with high quality materials, and essentially screams the Volvo name in its use of design cues.
