Bushbunker : Australian Bushfire Safety Bunkers

Bushfires are being considered as one of the most dangerous natural disasters and keeping the terrible Australian Black Saturday bushfires during the last February in mind a concept survival option has been developed named Bushbunker. This concept is an architecturally designed safety bunker that is able to protect you when required. This concept bunker is comprehensively designed to endure people during the severe environmental situations that a massive bushfire may produce. This bunker contains a sitting arrangement for 3 to 4 person and adequate water preservation and food storage to keep the insiders alive for few days till the fire becomes under control.

Bushbunker represents a concept that has been designed from scratch specifically as a bushfire bunker, and comprehensively engineered to withstand the severe environmental conditions that a major bushfire produces. It has been designed for maximum survivor ability no matter the intensity or type of fire.

A series of two fire doors is used to separate the entrance/storage area from the bunkers main interior to provide a fail safe, and to create an air lock which protects against the infiltration of radiant heat through the first steel fire door. This is an extremely important design feature, as some of the most severe burns to Black Saturday fire survivors were caused by radiant heat.

To outfit the interior, the design makes use of standard off the shelf components such as steel fire doors, steel frames and sealing, bench seating, compressed air cylinders, battery powered electric lighting, storage shelving, water drums, UHF radio and EPIRB, and fire blankets and first aid. This in turn allows for flexibility in the design, and reduces costs.

The Bushbunker has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 adults for an extended period when equipped with compressed air cylinders. These air cylinders also have the additional feature of providing a positive internal air pressure inside the bunker making it impossible for noxious and poisonous outside gasses and smoke to enter.

Hanging above each seating area is a series of refillable standard 20 Litre water containers which provide a gravity fed source of clean water for drinking, cooling and first aid purposes.

Due to its standardized size and modular construction, and depending on the site conditions of a home, the Bushbunker can be specially incorporated into the structure of a house or home, free standing, set into an embankment or partially or totally buried underground.

Owing to the need an Amsterdam based product designer Martin Saemmer has recently designed a great shelf that could be transformed into various shapes and evolve multiple storage and shelving needs. Looking like a solid block, this shelf can be changed into different shapes and styles just by pushing and pulling the racks. This transformer shelf doesn’t even occupy much space and can be put up in any corner of your house. It’s a multipurpose shelf that could provide you ample of storage area to arrange every small and medium size items of your room.

This room is designed in an innovative manner offering 2 options. One is highly reduced and exclusive of its surroundings and second one is spread-out and interlocked into its environment. The furniture is mobile and incorporated within the room including chair, bed, shelving, wardrobe and a table. You would not have ever seen such a design with increased variety and possibilities for people.

The Matching Tree : Space-Efficient Furniture System

Inspired by the design of a tree, this Matching Tree or Tree House is very useful concept for a librarian. It is shelving unit with a ladder built in to the bookcase in order to have all the books within one’s reach. One can easily adjust or extend ladder from floor to ceiling to reach to the higher shelves. This design submission came from Kuan-Sheng Wu, take a look at the V-shape of this concept, it assists to balance the weight of the bookcase and also protects it falling during an earthquake. The whole design attaches to the ceiling with the help of round discs that makes it completely freestanding. The Matching Tree is also one of IDSA 2008 finalists, congratulations !

The Matching Tree is a system furniture, utilizing the expansion and rotation of supporting pillars to match the furniture with the surrounding interior of all heights and shapes, without any drilling or destructing the buildings. The Matching Tree also consists of ladder, which is required when reaching for the upper bookshelves; normally the ladder is embedded into the bookshelf, and may be lowered when required.

Trunk Station Ad – Your Office in A Box

After casulo, here comes another invention from Japan called Trunk Station Ad, a workstation in a box. I guess we are going to see a lot of transforming furniture design in the future, this is due to saving space issue that we are going to face. The W 906mm x D 615mm H x 1190mm sized melamine resin trunk opens to reveal an efficient work space, complete with pre-drilled holes for electrical and component wires/cables, a fold out desk, and plenty of shelving for a whole lot of extras (including some add-on units). The price tag is around $1,980, quite expensive, well … saving space is never cheap.
