Samsung Young Design Award 2009 Finalists

Samsung has organized young design award for the third time this year aiming to find out the creativity of young Italian design students focusing on sustainable and functional digital household solutions to improve the living quality of the future civilization. Following are the 9 finalist projects that was exhibited in the award ceremony held at Triennial in Milan.

PAD is a digital pet family that improves the consumption of energy by monitoring the status of the environment.

The main controller of the ‘Stand Off’ is the accelerometer that can detect the exact location of an object and sends Bluetooth signal to switch the appliance on or off.

The ‘Re-Siker’ system with its two parts has been designed for recycling stations that can pack bags and provides a serial number through one part and the other part informs the user on recyclable items among them and ways of compositing and implementing them in the market.

Intelligent Organizer is a device that solves the electric line over-charging problems.

DNA is a floating unit that can generate continuous and affordable energy from the sun and wind.

Recycle is an exercise bike integrated with energy producing ability.

Light concept can produce florescent and luminescent illumination without using electricity.

E-plant provides easy energy consumption information.

Self Control device improves knowledge and perception of in-house energy consumption.

Triclo : Innovative Tricycle Concept for Urban Environment

The Triclo is an innovative tricycle concept, featuring the functionality of a paddling tricycle, while offering the outlook of a futuristic transportation means. This vehicle is designed to make room for one person only and comprises paddles with a convenient sitting arrangement. The Triclo has a steering wheel instead of conventional tricycle handles and an innovative and unique rear wheel setup. It features a shade over the driver that will let the driver protected from the sun and mild rain.

Randall words about Triclo:

Triclo is a conceptual design of what a tricycle can be in a urban environment. It uses an organic forms and contemporary trend. Balance in visual volume and mass. Using arrays and knots was the basis for the formal development and geometric design.

The concept was: low material vs. high volume

The design is targeted for a younger market but can be used by adults too. The idea was to create a tricycle with a diferent look to capture the attention of people and thus encourage exercise. At the same time the concept of design is important to not use much material in the product and reduce costs.

A tricycle is more than a bicycle but less than a motorbike, but this tricycle has almost a cab, this protects of the sun and rain to the user. Therefore, that is its advantage over a motorcycle that somehow is to approach a car. Maybe this way, providing superior comfort offered by a bicycle or even a conventional tricycle, is a way for people interested in using the product and increasing exercise in the population. The design is targeted for a younger market but can be used by adults too.

The materials were designed to be recycled once they finish their service life. There are variety of colors to suit all tastes.

Organic Motion Bike is Based on Z-Frame Concept

One can say without a hitch of a doubt that the bicycle is one of the most environment friendly modes of transportation designed by man. It also is a good medium of exercise so to say as the driving force is one of organic human effort. This new bicycle design called OM-Organik Motion is based on the Z – frame concept, which features integrated systems such as integrated front and rear suspension and an integrated shaft drive. The handlebars and saddle are adjustable and the joystick mounted gear and brake lever system are incorporated along with safety features such as reflectors on the outer wheels and in built-in taillight. XE Tricycle Bike, Health and Fun Are Combined In One Unique Experience

The new concept tricycle which uses the XE experience is both an electric bike while being an exercise-cycle. The overall design just like the thought is quite innovative as one need to exercise using the cycle which charges the batteries to be able to utilize the services of the tricycle. So one can say that this is quite a green concept, as in doing this change over there has been no pollution and the unique shape encourages to keep using/exercising extensively, thus, having fun on the drive. The “Elliptigo” is the new concept in bicycle designs that combines best aspects of running and cycling in the process creating a fun and effective outdoor exercise device. The overall device is quite innovative and different from the conventional bicycles that we have been used to. The user is in standing position and the pedaling motion is elliptical which is like running without impacting the body. It strengthens bones and muscles and is comfortable and safer compared to sitting and riding the bicycle. Unlike other bike designs, this bike is actually closer to reality. Discovery Bike with Detachable Front Light

Taiwan based designer Eric So has come with a Discovery bike, which was featured in the 12th International Bicycle Design Competition. The bike of course looks sleek and at the first look seems more like an exercise bike but it sure is one that is mobile. The frame design is based in a smooth diamond shaped structure, which has been incorporated innovatively in a detachable front light which also acts as a flashlight. The design enhances the functionality of the accessory maintaining its visual integration.
