The E-Ball is a sphere shaped computer concept which is the smallest design among all the laptops and desktops have ever made. This PC concept features all the traditional elements like mouse, keyboard, large screen display, DVD recorder, etc, all in an innovative manner. E-Ball is designed to be placed on two stands, opens by simultaneously pressing and holding the two buttons located on each side. After opening the stand and turning ON the PC, pressing the detaching mouse button will allow you to detach the optical mouse from the PC body. This concept features a laser keyboard that can be activated by pressing the particular button.

Slider is an innovative ultra mobile computer concept that can handle all the requirements of a user all through the day. The concept features a full functional 9” touchscreen display and a full QWERTY keyboard which can be revealed through flipping the screen. VOIP video chatting and flawless mobile video streaming can be achieved through its 1GB RAM and 1.5GHz processor, while the keyboard allows the user to send emails and post blog entries easily. The main difficulty that this ultra mobile personal computer faces is finding a reliable hinge that conveys data from the screen and other necessary components located in the upper half of the device to the hard drive and the motherboard. Because of its ultra compact shape, the battery life is significantly hindered, however, it still can ensure 4 to 7 hours of operation.

Buddy is a concept computer system which was specially designed keeping a better home-living environment in mind. This concept was inspired from the usual home furniture, and was aimed to enhance the major roles that computers take in our daily life. Buddy is consists of three components – a portable small touchscreen, a big touchscreen connected with a projector for sharing home entertainment with family and friends, and a module that comprises all other necessary hardware and utilities, and acts as a charging station for other two components. Both the small and the large component are able to act as an independent computer, but if you want, you can use the little one as a cordless keyboard when working on the big screen.

The Thrones V1.0 is a concept computing recliner specially designed for the gaming market and society. It is an interactive device that allows a person to explore the digital media without using conventional input devices such as mouse or keyboards; instead, there are two touch surfaces and a footrest that can be adjusted according to your needs for longer computing comfortably. The screen is 18 inches, hence minimizes eye strain and it can also turn to transparent when not in use. When working at the computer you can recline as it is ergonomically designed. If you need a short break you can sink into the luxurious leather seating. The futuristic look to computing is certainly here with the throne.

Earlier this year, Toyota and Royal College of Art Students (RCA) have launched a creative partnership to promote innovative design for urban living, using Toyota’s new iQ city car as the inspiration. Students were asked to create an item that reflect the concept of ‘intelligent urban living’.

Yusuf Muhammad, was the winner of Living Room category and joint overall winner. His Yu Type design sits on the computer keyboard and allows ‘hunt and peck’ two fingered typists the opportunity to increase their speed and confidence. He is now thinking about developing the idea and hopes to include features like spell checking and predictive text to increase its appeal. Judges praised the way he addressed a social issue of an aging population within the urban context.

In response of this question “What next for your design?”, Yusuf says:

“I’m definitely going to set aside a fair chunk of the prize to develop it. There’s a lot of people who would benefit – 79% of people who use a keyboard hunt and peck, disproportionately older people and first time users, and even dyslexic users. I’m dyslexic and I would definitely benefit from a device like this.”

Dominic Hargreaves, was winner of the Garage category and a joint overall winner. His concept for a bike lock which sits at first storey level on the front of a building is designed to hoist bikes out of the reach of potential thieves. Along with Yusuf Muhammad, judges felt that Dominic’s design would benefit the most from money to develop the idea further.

In response of this question “How are you going to develop your design?”, Dominic says:

“The initial prototype was just for personal use. I would really like produce a public one, which would lead to a much better design. At a train station it would encourage commuting and free up the roads and the tube.”

Graeme Davies took the first prize in the Kitchen category. His Quicksnap icetray design solves the problem of dropping two ice cubes on the floor for every one you manage to get in the glass by creating an undercut to release individual ice cubes. Judge Lance Scott called it “An innovative solution to a very simple but annoying problem”. Graeme, who has a patent on the design, is looking to have it on sale by the summer.

In response of this question “Did you feel confident in your design?”, Graeme says:

“I think what’s really been good about it is that the design is really simple. People appreciate and get it straight away. That’s probably what made it stand out. The next stage will be tooling and hopefully we will get it in production by the summer.”

By looking at this new design no one even in their second thought would even make a wild guess that this device is related to computers. The name B- Membrane identifies an innovative design and idea. Designed by Korean Won-Seok Lee this has a concept of hybrid laptop or desktop. Its unique design eradicates the need of a monitor and is replaced by projector that is adjustable to develop into a captivating source of light environment. It has a touch screen keyboard which appears only when you are in need of it and the optical reader is perfectly incorporated into the design by sinuous lines. This device is definitely a mixture of functionality and style.
