Pagora is an innovative concept that allows a place to put your bike while getting some rest under a lotus flower shaped spot. The design was inspired from the traditional roofing tile of Korea, yet has been modernize to enhance the appearance and functionality. Pagora features adequate space for racking one bicycle only and the rider is envisioned to be protected from the sun through its beautiful shade that protects only the heat of the sun, not the light. The frame of the concept has been made durable enough through using rigid steel pipes with glossy metallic color.

RKS, the world-renowned innovation, strategy and design consultant and Water Advocacy KOR Water have joined together to create a groundbreaking strategy for saving water and the planet. To succeed on this issue, an innovative program of four new KOR ONE colors, ocean blue, sunrise orange, saw-grass green and orchid pink, ha been announced that empowers consumers to develop their health as well as the health of the world. The mission of KOR is to protect and celebrate water and this program will surely bring more awareness to matters that have deep impact on the planet’s future of water. All these gleaming colors are made of completely BPA-free copolyester and comprise one-handed opening mechanism, a non-losable cap and KOR Stone inside lid.

[Press Release]
Thousand Oaks, California, June 23, 2009 – World-recognized strategy, innovation, and design consultancy RKS and Water Advocacy KOR Water teamed together again to create a strategy that empowers consumers to make a difference. The result of this collaboration is the introduction of KOR’s Thirst for Giving™ program.

News of the original KOR ONE’s release was met by an immediate and overwhelming positive response. The viral PR campaign driven by RKS resulted in countless blog pickups, with the KOR ONE landing on Oprah’s “O List,” winning awards for both design and environmental preservation, and driving sales beyond all projections.

To build on this success, KOR Water enlisted RKS to create a Brand Trajectory and Product Proliferation Plan that would amplify the authenticity of the KOR brand. The first result of this effort is KOR’s new Thirst for Giving program to raise funds for water-related charities and help increase understanding of the vital role clean water plays in all our lives. Announced in conjunction of the introduction of three new KOR ONE colors, this innovative program empowers consumers to improve their health as they improve the health of the planet. “KOR’s mission is to celebrate and protect water,” said KOR founder and CEO Eric Barnes. “The Thirst for Giving program is our way of bringing more awareness to issues that deeply impact the future of water on our planet.”

The RKS strategy team first used Psycho-Aesthetics to enable KOR to identify organizations whose passions and goals aligned with KOR’s mission. Next, RKS created a strategy to create meaning… increasing the consumer’s ability to make a difference. Through this program, KOR has aligned with non-profits who are doing exceptional work related to causes KOR supports: ocean and watershed protection, the global water crisis and container recycling.

With each KOR ONE color tied to a specific cause, KOR will donate 1% of all sales to this select group. The original Ocean Blue KOR ONE supports Ocean Protection through the Agalita Marine Research Foundation. Sunrise Orange is for the Container Recycling Institute, while Sawgrass Green sales support Watershed Protection through The Wetlands Initiative. Orchid Pink is for the Global Water Crisis, with purchases supporting Blue Planet Run, a non-profit dedicated to bringing the global community together to provide safe drinking water to the more than one billion people who suffer for lack of access to clean water. “Blue Planet Run is thrilled that KOR Water recognizes how important safe drinking water is to every aspect of human life and is taking the lead in making change happen, said Lisa Nash, CEO of Blue Planet Run. “Our partnership will fund safe drinking water projects around the world, where as little as $30 can give someone a lifetime of safe drinking water.” KOR Water’s Thirst for Giving™ program is administered by 1% for the Planet, a non-profit dedicated to building and supporting an alliance of businesses that are financially committed to creating a healthy planet.

All four lustrous colors are made of BPA-free Eastman Tritan™ copolyester and include the original KOR ONE’s see-through design (eliminating worries of what might be hidden inside a metal bottle), innovative one-handed opening, a cap you can’t lose, inspirational KOR Stone inside lid, and a “just right” spout big enough for ice cubes and easy on the lips.

The Thirst for Giving program and the release of the new colors are just the beginning. “We’re excited about the new product lines we’re developing with KOR,” said Tom White, Executive Vice President of RKS. “RKS is thrilled to focus our strategy, design, and innovation teams on building the KOR Water brand and enabling them to achieve their goals.”

Teakwondo ‘One’ is a concept design for Teakwondo Park World Headquarters which is actually a beautifully landscaped and wisely organized woodlands, valleys and natural streams. Moreover, the park associated building complexes are designed to be a world cultural heritage center highlighting the beauty, sport and spirit of Teakwondo as well as the Korean culture. The designer has envisioned various complexes inside the Park such as the Teakwondo Promotion Foundation, Korean Teakwondo Federation, World Teakwondo Federation, World Teakwondo Headquarters, CISM Teakwondo Committee Headquarters, Myungingwan, Teakwonjeon, visitor and exhibition centers, a sports arena, premier lodging and training facility and most of all, a cultural tourist spot for visitors.

Teakwondo Park would be a great place for visitors to discover the artistry of Teakwondo, Korea. This place will offer various embodiment training sessions such as Body ‘One’ to prepare body, Mind ‘One’ to inspire the mind and Spirit ‘One’ for complete the spirit. The main goals that this design has emphasized most is to develop a world cultural heritage spot and create a place that promotes the research, education and practice of groundwork for visitors all over the world. Moreover, this concept would be a center to promote Teakwondo and Korean art and culture through an international network. This mega-construction will also provide the opportunity to promote sustainable and socio-cultural synergy between the local markets.

Braille E-book is a conceptual design of a digital and portable e-book reader, developed by Korean industrial designers. This is quite certain that by seeing the design, everyone will admire that this gadget is really necessary for reading e-books. However, e-books of Braille compatible version are not much available in the market because of the higher price. EAP is the mother technology that can develop special patterns on the plastic surface by raising those elements with an electronic signal. This unique technology used by Braille E-Book can translate the content into Braille.

An ogre definitely isn’t a great living thing, rather the appearance of an ogre makes us hate it but, when it is about Shrek, the total hatred theme disappears immediately. This is because this peach loving weird character is very much popular with us and consequently he deserves a special gadget that makes him more extraordinary. Sang Hoon Lee, a South Korean designer, has designed a concept Shrek MP3 player with a couple of chic headphones which will surely come to the focus with its release. The ease of finding a place of the headphone on the player reflects the approach that Shrek portends.

This new car concept which was a participant at the Michellin challenge design 2009 is one that is modern in functions yet contemporary in design. The car runs on the new energy system known as OCE or One Common Energy wherein the complete system runs on the same type of smart battery. The system consists of a battery, CPU with customized interface for user communication and function which in itself can replace the need for the regular battery, engine and other control systems found in today’s cars. The car has been designed by Korean born Yongbang Ho.

Many times one of the most common complaints that the pet owners have is their pets being lost. The innovative pet holder by South Korean Industrial designer Ji-Hoon Chung can be said to be a tool that is a very helpful for all the pet owners. The device though looks like any ordinary pet holder but on closer examination one can see that it’s more than just that. Tucked away in this normal pet collar is the USB pen drive on which the user can feed in the data about his contact details which will facilitate in the tracking of the pet in case it is lost. We can save info like dog’s name, blood type, address and phone number, then people can find a lost pet’s owner very quickly. So, it is quite a handy solution for the pet owners.

The new concept by Korean designer Natan Kwak named Pebbles is a grill that has been inspired from the traditional stone grill of Korea. It allows to prepare the food safely which in the end is more beneficial to the body and the food is more effectively cooked as the device’s body structure is flexible and pebbles also gets adjusted according to the ingredients. Add to that its portable, so one can say that it’s convenient as well. It also has flexible heating options unlike the other pebble coking products, so be it grilling fish or meat, it is a perfect companion.

The new city center designed by Dutch architects MVRDV for Gwanggyo, a city coming up 35 kms from Seoul in South Korea seems to be something taken out of the sci fi movies. Expected to be completed by 2011, the city is sufficient enough to hold 77000 inhabitants and has a design envisioned with two centers which is a mix of housing, culture, office, retail, and leisure and education spaces. Various atriums are created in the towers catering to various categories, with box hedges being planted on the roofs and terraces which in turn improves ventilation and reduces usage of energy and water.

[Press Release]
MVRDV wins Gwanggyo City Centre Competition, near Seoul, South Korea

The Daewoo Consortium and the municipality of Gwanggyo announced the MVRDV concept design for a dense city centre winner of the developer’s competition for the future new town of Gwanggyo, located 35km south of the Korean capital Seoul. The plan consists of a series of overgrown hill shaped buildings with great programmatic diversity, aiming for high urban density and encouragement of further developments around this so-called ‘Power Centre’, one of the envisioned two centre’s of the future new town.

Since the beginning of the millennium local nodes with a high density concentration of mixed program are used in Korean town planning. These nodes consist of a mix of public, retail, culture, housing, offices and leisure generating life in new metropolitan areas and encouraging further developments around them: the Power Centre strategy. The Gwanggyo Power Centre will consist of 200,000m2 housing, 48,000m2 offices, 200,000m2 mix of culture, retail, leisure and education and 200,000m2 parking.

This diverse program has different needs for phasing, positioning and size. To facilitate this all elements are designed as rings. By pushing these rings outwards, every part of the program receives a terrace for outdoor life. Plantations around the terraces with a floor to floor circulation system store water and irrigate the plants. The roofs of these hills and the terraces are planted with box hedges creating a strong, recognizable, cohesive park. This vertical park will improve the climate and ventilation, reduce energy and water usage. As a result a series of overgrown green ‘hills’ appear in the landscape.

The site is surrounded by a beautiful lake and forested hills, the design aims to create a landscape on top of the new program that enlarges the green qualities and that links the surrounding parks by turning the site into a park.

The shifting of the floors causes as a counter effect hollow cores that form large atriums. They serve as lobbies for the housing and offices, plazas for the shopping center and halls for the museum and leisure functions. In each tower a number of voids connect to the atrium providing for light and ventilation and creating semi-public spaces. On the lower floors the atriums are connected through a series of public spaces on various levels linking the towers and serving the outdoor facilities of the culture, retail and leisure program. The Power Centre creates a dense urban program with a green regard.

The concept plan is currently at the Gyeonggi provincial authority’s Urban Innovation Corporation for further development and feasibility study, the entire new town will be a self sufficient city of 77,000 inhabitants. The estimated budget and timeframe are still in the process of being established, completion is envisioned for 2011. A consortium lead by Daewoo develops the project with local firm DA Group, which commissioned MVRDV to design the scheme. British firm Arup is involved as engineer.
